Andrew Garfield Reacts To Charlie Cox Mocking His Spider-Man In Video

Andrew Garfield reacts to Daredevil‘s Charlie Cox roasting his incarnation of Spider-Man. Though the Marvel superhero has been played by many actors in films, television shows, and even musicals, there are three actors whose cinematic appearances have made them the most visible Spider-Man portrayals. Tobey Maguire was the first of these, starring in three Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi from 2002 to 2007. Garfield played the role in Marc Webb’s rebooted Spider-Man franchise from 2012 to 2014. Most recently, Tom Holland introduced Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His latest movie, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, saw Holland’s Peter Parker meeting Maguire and Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man, tying all three franchises together into the MCU.

In a video posted to TikTok by British GQ, Garfield reacts to Cox playfully mocking his Spider-Man at GQ’s Man of the Year event. Cox roasted his friend by declaring that, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Garfield “solidified his legacy as the third greatest Spider-Man of all time.” Garfield seems to find the joke hilarious, laughing at Cox’s ribbing along with the rest of the crowd, which includes Star Wars actor John Boyega. How Reactions To Garfield’s Spider-Man Changed Over The Years

Considering that many only think of the three major Spider-Man actors when discussing the character, Cox’s teasing that Garfield is the “third greatest” is a playful low-blow. However, it’s far from the first time that Garfield has heard criticisms like it, as reactions to his Amazing Spider-Man films were mixed at best. When Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man released in 2012, Marvel fans were harsh critics of Garfield’s depiction of the character, with the most common complaint being that his Peter Parker wasn’t ‘nerdy’ enough. Peter Parker is well-loved in the Spider-Man comics for being a clumsy, awkward nerd, while his superhero alter-ego is his much cooler counterpart. However, fans found Garfield’s Peter to be too suave and trendy to be an accurate depiction of the character.

However, since Garfield’s final film as Spider-Man in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, public opinion has changed rather significantly. Though Webb’s films were criticized for everything from poor writing to bad villain choices, Garfield’s acting was applauded, and fans came to lament that Garfield could have been the perfect Spider-Man actor if he’d had a better script to work with. When Garfield returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home, his entrance was met with cheers from the audience who have since found Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man films to be nostalgic.

Will Garfield Play Spider-Man Again?

With Maguire and Garfield’s iterations of Spider-Man both a part of the now long-running MCU, many Marvel fans have wondered if Garfield will return to the role once more, or if the canceled The Amazing Spider-Man 3 could even possibly resume development. However, Garfield admitted back in February that he has “no plans” to play Spider-Man again, and that he feels “far too old” now for the role anyway. However, with the MCU exploring multiverses more and more, it isn’t impossible that Garfield’s Spider-Man could swing in to lend Holland’s a hand one more time.
