Ant-Man 3 Producer Compares Quantumania To Winter Soldier & Civil War

Marvel executive Stephen Broussard compares Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.

According to Marvel executive Stephen Broussard, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is similar to Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War in a key way. Directed once more by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is Paul Rudd’s third solo film as the titular MCU hero. The movie sees Rudd’s hero explore the wild wonders of the Quantum Realm alongside the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), Cassie (Kathryn Newton), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer). Serving as the first film in MCU Phase 5, Reed’s upcoming film will also introduce the franchise’s next big bad in the form of Kang (Jonathan Majors).

The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailers have already teased that the upcoming film may be more emotional and impactful than the previous two movies, but Broussard, in a new press release from Marvel, has affirmed that the film will have consequences as big as those in the latter two Captain America films. The Marvel executive explains that both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War both had major plot points that determined the direction of the MCU for the years that followed, something that the third Ant-Man movie also has. Check out Brousard’s full comment below:

“We talk about movies like ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ in which you saw the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. and it felt like the entirety of the MCU turned on that. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ was another film where you saw heroes divided and in camps and battle lines being drawn—it really felt like the future of the MCU was going to be defined by the action of that film. We really liked the idea of making this Ant-Man film as important and integral to the MCU going forward.”

How Ant-Man 3 Sets The Stage For The MCU

Kang using his powers in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Specifics of the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania storyline continue to be revealed in each new trailer and piece of promotional material, but the introduction of Majors’ Kang the Conqueror alone will be monumental for the MCU. Majors villain is set to serve as the central antagonist for Phases 5 and 6, fully coming into his own in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is currently scheduled to be released in spring 2025. Kang has been likened to Thanos in terms of his power level, and Josh Brolin’s villain famously defeated the Avengers at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

In addition to introducing the MCU’s next big villain, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is also seemingly giving Cassie a much bigger role. Much of Phase 4 has been dedicated to introducing new heroes that will play a prominent role in the franchise moving forward, including Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) in Hawkeye, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) in Ms. Marvel, and Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With the MCU having said goodbye to heroes like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania seems like it will be setting the stage for Newton’s younger hero who will play an important role in the years ahead.

It remains to be seen how Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will fare with audiences and critics, but the film is already shaping up to be very different from past installments, which were much more lighthearted. The repercussions from both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and especially Captain America: Civil War continued to be felt in subsequent MCU movies, and it certainly looks like upcoming Marvel films will be shaped by the events that occur in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. With anticipation building, audiences thankfully now only have just over a month to wait before they can experience the new film for themselves.
