Ant-Man 3 Writer Confirms One Dead Simpsons Character Inspired MODOK

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness confirms that one dead Simpsons character inspired the MCU movie’s version of MODOK.

The Marvel Comics villain MODOK is set to debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and the movie’s scribe, Jeff Loveness, reveals an intriguing connection between the villain and a character from The Simpsons. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will close out the Ant-Man trilogy with a bang, as the movie presents the biggest stakes the franchise has ever had. Ant-Man, The Wasp, and the rest of the crew will go toe-to-toe with Kang the Conqueror — in the new overarching villain of the MCU’s first appearance.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, Loveness revealed that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s take on MODOK draws inspiration from two characters — one of them being a dead character from The Simpsons. Corey Stoll plays MODOK in the movie, who returns as his Ant-Man character Darren Cross, aka Yellowjacket. Cross was last seen getting crushed to subatomic size, which will likely factor into his transformation to MODOK. Loveness reveals that Stoll’s performance as MODOK will be partly informed by the deceased Simpsons character Frank Grimes, explaining his reasoning in the following quote:

I’ll just say he was inspired by Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda and Frank Grimes in an old Simpsons episode – this really put-upon, selfish, entitled but then also deeply sad, insecure man who knows that he got a shit deal in life and is trying to make the best of it.

How Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania Can Set Up The MCU’s Future

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has the lofty objective of setting up the MCU’s new overarching villain Kang, who will take over the universe’s big bad reigns from Thanos when he debuts in the film. The Ant-Man franchise has dealt chiefly with small-stakes stories and villains, compared to some bigger heroes like Captain America and Thor. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania changes all that by setting up Kang, the next Avengers movie, and possibly giving the jump-start to the Young Avengers. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’s writer Loveness is confirmed to be the scribe for Kang’s big battle with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

That movie is set to include a new formation of the Avengers after the original team ended in Avengers: Endgame, with both Iron Man and Black Widow dead, as well as an old Steve Rogers. Kang trying to escape the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania will be directly linked to Loveness’ Avengers movie, with the villain’s Kang Dynasty plan likely getting a tease in the new Ant-Man. The other big set-up Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is poised to do, pertains to the Young Avengers. Cassie Lang will be a significant part of the movie, venturing into the Quantum Realm with her own super-suit. Rumors surrounding the movie hint at Cassie looking into building an Avengers team — the Young Avengers — by the end of the movie. This possibility is certainly plausible with many team members already in the MCU.

What To Expect From Corey Stoll’s MODOK

Stoll showed shades of how fun his Darren Cross could be when the actor was cut loose in the first Ant-Man. Loveness’ comments about his approach to writing MODOK indicate that Stoll’s villain will share a lot of similarities to Patton Oswalt’s version of MODOK from the character’s Hulu adult animated series of the same name. That show presented a darkly comedic take on the character, which should work on Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, given Stoll’s excellent comedic timing and the movie’s darker tone.
