After a few recent casting additions, Blumhouse’s The Exorcist legacy sequel has officially wrapped filming. The horror franchise first launched in the early 1970s, adapted from William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name, with the author penning the script and William Friedkin at the helm. The Exorcist proved to be one of the biggest hits of its time, garnering controversy for its material, while also going on to land 10 Oscar nominations, including winning Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound, and was the highest-grossing R-rated horror film until 2017’s It, leading to a franchise of sequels and prequels.
Deadline has brought word that Blumhouse’s Exorcist legacy sequel has officially wrapped filming. The announcement comes paired with the news that Stephanie Allain, a Hollywood veteran on the likes of Hustle & Flow and Dear White People, among others, has joined the next chapter of the horror franchise.

Blumhouse’s Exorcist legacy sequel will star Leslie Odom Jr. as a young father whose child becomes possessed by an evil entity. With nowhere else to turn and in desperate need of help to save the kid, the father will seek out Ellen Burstyn’s Chris MacNeil for help given her own personal experience with her daughter Regan’s possession from Pazuzu in the original Exorcist movie. Alongside Odom Jr. and Burstyn, the cast for the new film will feature Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Olivia Marcum, Raphael Sbarge, Jennifer Nettles and Okwui Okpokwasilit.
David Gordon Green and his creative team, Danny McBride and Scott Teems, are reuniting with Blumhouse for The Exorcist legacy sequel. The studio is looking to capitalize on the success the group enjoyed from their prior collaboration on the Halloween reboot trilogy, with the 2018 legacy sequel having garnered the best reviews since John Carpenter’s original and garnering strong box office returns despite progressively weaker reviews.
While Burstyn is confirmed to be reprising her role of Chris for the film, it’s unclear how Blumhouse’s Exorcist legacy sequel will address the larger canon of the franchise. Green has previously indicated the film wouldn’t outright be retconning prior installments, though considering the short-lived Exorcist TV show, itself a direct sequel to the original movie, saw the death of Chris, it seems the series will have to be left out.
