Christoph Waltz Happy To Return For Alita: Battle Angel 2

Exclusive: Christoph Waltz is interested in reprising his role as Dr. Dyson Ido in an Alita: Battle Angel sequel alongside co-star Rosa Salazar.

Christoph Waltz reveals that he would be willing to return for an Alita: Battle Angel sequel. Alita: Battle Angel is an adaptation of the popular Japanese cyberpunk manga Gunnm, created by Yukito Kishiro. The film, which was released in 2019, captured audiences’ attention and sets up a potential franchise, but so far there has been no official movement on a sequel.

However, 2022 brought renewed hope for Alita fans, with Rosa Salazar revealing that she still talks to director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron about Alita. And during the Avatar: The Way of Water press tour, producer Jon Landau specifically mentioned an interest in returning to Alita. Cameron and Rodriguez even swore a virtual blood oath recently to make another Alita film. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, promoting his new Prime Video series The Consultant, Waltz reveals that he is interested in returning for a potential Alita: Battle Angel sequel.

What An Alita: Battle Angel Sequel Could Look Like

It seems many of the key players in Alita: Battle Angel are interested in continuing the young warrior’s story, with both Salazar and Waltz likely at the center of a potential sequel. Cameron has proven an impressive ability to develop a world, especially with Avatar, and Alita is primed to evolve into a larger franchise. The movie sets up a larger franchise not only in the final moments as Alita points her blade to the sky, but notably with three uncredited cameos that could hint at the direction an Alita: Battle Angel sequel could go.

The first and most obvious cameo is Edward Norton as Alita’s nemesis, the villainous Nova. Alita’s goal of avenging Hugo by killing Nova can only be achieved by becoming the Final Champion in motorball, which sets up a larger role for Jai Courtney as motorball champion Jashugan. He could either be set up as a mentor for Alita or another nemesis, as he stands in the way of her ultimate goal.

With Alita continuing to compete in motorball and likely continuing to work as a Hunter-Warrior, more of her memories could come to the surface. This could open the door to further exploring Alita’s past as a warrior for the United Republic of Mars and her relationship with her mentor and fellow warrior Gelda, played by Michelle Rodriguez. It seems Alita: Battle Angel fans may have reason to hope with the success of Avatar: The Way of Water proving years between sequels isn’t necessarily a problem for box office success and so many of the original team showing an interest in returning to this world.
