Could Neve Campbell’s Sidney Return After Scream 6? Producer Responds

With the latest chapter finally in theaters, producer William Sherak is looking to the future and addressing Neve Campbell’s potential Sidney Prescott return after Scream 6. After acting as leading lady for the slasher franchise for four films, and returning in supporting fashion with 2022’s Scream, Campbell announced she would not be returning for the sequel due to a pay dispute, feeling unsatisfied with the offer presented. Scream 6 would go on to bring back both Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers and Hayden Panetierre’s Kirby, along with the 2022 franchise newcomers.

Deadline recently caught up with Sherak and the Project X Entertainment team to discuss Scream 6. When the subject turned to Neve Campbell’s infamous franchise exit due to a pay dispute, the producer shared his thoughts on Sidney’s potential return in the future, offering an optimistic outlook for her to come back. See what Sherak said below:

Look, she is an amazing person. We had an amazing time with her on [2022’s Scream], [so] we look at that and say, she is a spectacular part of this franchise. We want her to make decisions that are right for her, and she will always be welcome and part of this franchise. I think the fun of what [writers] Jamie [Vanderbilt] and Guy [Busick] did in 5 and 6 proves that anybody can exist in this franchise at any moment. So, we look at it and go, ‘It’s a door, it’s open, and at any time you can walk through the door, whoever it is, as a legacy character.’ We continue to just widen how many legacy characters we have, and they’re all amazing people that we can bring back at any time. This story is amazing in the way it lived, and everybody in it is spectacular. And as we look to the future, should we be allowed to continue making them, any and everybody that has been in them before can come be part of them again. Our legacy cast is part of our family and we look at them that way, and we just want to keep having a good time making them, so at any moment, that can be part of the franchise.

Could Scream 7 Feature Sidney’s Return?

Though the franchise is running overlong for some, and running the risk of becoming the very films it satirizes, Scream does seem to have found new life with directing team Radio Silence at the helm. Reviews for Scream 6 have been largely favorable, earning the best critic score since 1997’s Scream 2 and the best audience score of the entire franchise at the time of writing. This critical success is already turning up dividends at the box office, with Scream 6 projected to beat both Creed 3 and the franchise’s overall strongest opening mark.

The creative team behind Scream 6 have already begun teasing their ideas for the next film, thus leaving the door open for Campbell to return as Sidney in the future. The franchise star has previously assured she still cares for the movies and that she is open to considering coming back, should the offer made be fitting of “the value that I bring them.” Fellow franchise vet Skeet Ulrich recently indicated Campbell loved the direction of Scream 6‘s story and that she does miss being a part of the films.

With Scream 6 showing it can dominate the box office without Campbell’s Sidney at the forefront of the story or marketing, it does beg the question of whether the actor needs to return. Given there’s a number of other legacy characters franchise fans have been clamoring to see, namely Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher, it may ultimately prove a more creatively interesting venture to try and bring back these other faces.
