DC Reportedly Still Wants To Make Wonder Woman 3 With Gal Gadot

Wonder Woman 3 could still happen after all, as a new report affirms DC’s interest in making the movie with Gal Gadot even without Patty Jenkins.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios reportedly still want to make Wonder Woman 3 with Gal Gadot as the star, even if director Patty Jenkins does not return. The Wonder Woman movie franchise began as the crown jewel of the DC Universe, as the first movie released in 2017 earned critical acclaim and surpassed box office expectations. The success of its sequel is more difficult to determine due to its pandemic release, but Warner Bros.’ announcement that Wonder Woman 3 was in development shortly after its release teased its success. Two years later, though, DC Studios’ change in leadership brought fear about its status.

Reports began to circulate yesterday that Wonder Woman 3 was canceled by Warner Bros. and DC as the movie did not fit the unfolding vision that James Gunn and Peter Safran have for the cinematic universe’s future. Now, a report from Deadline provides a status update on the film, which includes stating that there is still interest in making another Wonder Woman movie at DC. The report corroborates recent news that Patty Jenkins declined reworking her Wonder Woman 3 script to fit the new DCU vision. While the initial report indicated the movie was no longer happening then, this update shares that the studio still wants to make Wonder Woman 3 and hopes Gal Gadot will agree to return even without Jenkins sticking around.

Wonder Woman 3 Could Be A Perfect Soft Reboot For Gal Gadot

If Gal Gadot does agree to return for Wonder Woman 3, the movie franchise and Wonder Woman are in a perfect position for a soft reboot. Patty Jenkins did have ideas for two more Wonder Woman movies and a possible spinoff, but an argument could be made that Wonder Woman 1984 works as a good conclusion to Diana’s arc. The first two movies were period pieces set in the DCU’s past and revolved around Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor’s romance. Wonder Woman 1984‘s ending teased Diana fully embracing her responsibility as being a hero for humanity.

While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League have shown Wonder Woman in the modern age, Wonder Woman 3 could fully embrace the setting and show how Diana fits within the current landscape. The movie could then be responsible for truly launching Wonder Woman’s modern day story, which could be the basis for a new trilogy itself. This would distinctly set Wonder Woman 3 apart from the first two movies without the DCU needing to completely reboot the character, especially if Gal Gadot sticks around.

What happens with Wonder Woman 3 is still very much up in the air right now, but the movie being reworked to keep Gal Gadot around as a fixture of the DCU is a better option than canceling her solo film and potentially needing to recast the role. Considering Gal Gadot shared her enthusiasm for playing Wonder Woman during the last few years and teased future plans just the day before the Wonder Woman 3 rumor mill began, her desire to keep playing Diana Prince is quite clear. Now, that could happen with a new creative team, new setting, new love interest, and a new status quo for the DCU.
