Denis Villeneuve reveals that his desire to continue working on the Dune universe remains strong even after completing the box office juggernaut Dune: Part Two. The sequel concludes the story of Frank Herbert’s first Dune book, following Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he rises to power on the desert planet Arrakis amid a struggle for control over the spice melange. With its star-studded cast, including Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and Javier Bardem, and new additions like Florence Pugh and Austin Butler, Dune: Part Two has solidified the franchise as a Hollywood blockbuster.
In conversation with The Wrap, Villeneuve expressed his gratitude for adapting Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel and his surprise at still being drawn to the universe. Despite the immense challenges of adapting Herbert’s sprawling and intricate narrative, Villeneuve expressed not only thanks for the opportunity but also an unexpected desire to continue exploring the world of Arrakis. Reflecting on his journey with the films, he shared:
When I saw “Part Two” finished, finally, I realized that that was it. I’d done it. I’d done an adaptation of “Dune.” And that is something that is an incredible privilege. I’m very grateful to have the chance to have done it. I think my biggest surprise about this is that I don’t want to run away from Arrakis. I’m still inspired to go back. That’s the thing that I was the most surprised by. I felt that after “Part Two,” I would need a break. I thought that I would want to go write a few films or do a couple of things before going back to “Dune: Messiah.” But the images that kept coming back to my mind, the appetite is absolutely intact. That’s the biggest surprise. I still want to go back to Arrakis.
What Villeneuve’s Commitment To Dune Means
Spice Continues To Flow, And So Does Villeneuve’s Inspiration
Villeneuve’s enduring enthusiasm for Dune is good news given that the Canadian filmmaker is set to direct the upcoming Dune: Part Three. This third installment, currently in development, will adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, the sequel to the original novel. While Warner Bros. has yet to officially green-light the project, Legendary Pictures is already advancing the script, and Villeneuve has teased a potential production start in 2026. Adapting Dune Messiah will allow Villeneuve to complete Paul Atreides’ arc as a complete and cohesive exploration of control and power with breathtaking visuals and an exceptional cast.
The success of the second movie, which grossed over $714 million worldwide and garnered widespread critical acclaim, has proven that audiences are equally as invested in the universe as Villeneuve himself. In his Dune: Part Two review, ScreenRant‘s Graeme Guttmann gave the sci-fi saga a score of 9 out of 10, writing, “The task of adapting Frank Herbert’s Dune was never going to be easy, but Denis Villeneuve chose to do it twice and managed to pull it off.” It remains an awards contender and is considered by many to be one of the best movies of 2024.
With Dune: Part Three set to explore Paul Atreides’ struggle with absolute power and religious fanaticism, the trilogy promises to maintain the epic scale and depth that viewers have come to expect after the first two installments. Although Villeneuve has confirmed that Part Three will be his final chapter in the saga, the rich themes of Dune Messiah ensure the film will deliver a powerful and fitting conclusion to this monumental sci-fi trilogy.
Our Take On Villeneuve’s Return to Arrakis
Dune Is The Sci-fi Gift That Keeps On Giving
Villeneuve’s devotion to the Dune universe showcases his unparalleled ability to balance epic storytelling with emotional depth. With Part Two‘s breathtaking visuals and profound narrative, the franchise has become a cultural milestone in modern sci-fi cinema. The upcoming Dune: Part Three promises to conclude Paul’s journey with a continued exploration of power, faith, and sacrifice, solidifying the trilogy as one of the greatest sci-fi spectacles to date. I think Villeneuve’s decision to end his involvement after Part Three ensures the saga will remain cohesive and impactful, cementing Dune’s legacy as a visually stunning and thematically rich space epic.
