Disney Showcases Best Look Yet At Their “Real” Lightsaber At SXSW

Disney Parks and Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro has given SXSW attendees their best look yet at the “realStar Wars lightsaber. At D23 in November 2021, Disney unveiled a “real” lightsaber – or, at least, the most real lightsaber yet. Pressing the trigger activates a motor that extends a tube, which lights up as it rises; it’s a spectacular effect, and Disney has since made it a core part of the Galactic Starcruiser themed hotel. It’s not perfect – the lightsabers appear quite fragile, meaning the actors who use them have to be very careful. But it’s as close to perfection as it is currently possible to get.

Speaking at a presentation at SXSW, Disney Parks and Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro gave attendees a close look at the “real” lightsaber. The lightsaber is the most iconic Star Wars symbol, and it’s truly exciting to get a proper look at this new design.

D’Amaro then invited Leslie Evans, head of R&D for Disney Imagineering, on-stage. “This was a hard project,” she noted. “This was not easy.

Will Disney’s “Real” Lightsaber Ever Be For Sale?

Disney’s “real” lightsaber is, unfortunately, very fragile; while the design seems to have improved, with D’Amaro holding it a lot less carefully than some actors at Galactic Starcruiser, his movements are still comparable in speed to the duel between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the first Star Wars movie. Disney Imagineering has pulled off a remarkable feat when it comes to creating a “real” lightsaber, but this fragility means it’s unlikely they’ll be going up for sale anytime soon.

Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser hasn’t really been a success, meaning the decision to associate these with the themed hotel has probably been a mistake. Hopefully D’Amaro’s latest presentations hint the House of Mouse is coming up with other ideas for how to deploy the technology, because although these “real” lightsabers are clearly flawed, they’re still tremendously effective. If so, presumably more will be revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2023.

For now, though, the videos from SXSW are the best look yet at Disney’s “real” lightsaber. D’Amaro was thrilled to show it off, turning it on and off again a couple of times, to the delight of attendees. These lightsabers really are the one thing every Star Wars fan would long to own.
