Dune 3’s 12-Year Time Jump & Cast Challenge Addressed By Denis Villeneuve

Denis Villeneuve addresses Dune 3‘s big time jump and how that poses a casting challenge. Villeneuve is the director of 2021’s Dune and this year’s Dune: Part Two, which adapted the first novel in Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi series. Dune: Part Two was met with great reviews and box office success, passing the first one’s total by a wide margin. The film featured a leading cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Christopher Walken. Since then, a third installment has been in development, which will adapt Herbert’s novel Dune: Messiah.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Villeneuve responded to the casting issue for Dune 3. He was asked multiple questions about the status of his Messiah adaptation and his plans for how to adapt it. In one such question, the interviewer inquired “That story is set 12 years in the future, so how would you do that with the cast?” Villeneuve offered a cryptic answer as to how he would deal with the time jump. Check out his response below:

That’s my problem. I know how to do that.

Dune: Part Three Does Not Have An Official Release Date.

Currently, Dune: Part Three does not have an official release date. However, Warner Bros has set Villeneuve’s next movie on December 18, 2026, which is speculated to be the third Dune movie. If so, this puts the release date at a little over 2.5 years after Part Two‘s release. If that project ends up being Messiah, given the sheer amount of special effects needed to create the world of Arrakis, filming will likely need to begin sometime next year to make that date.

Thus, the actors from the second movie will not be anywhere close to the age their characters are supposed to be.

Thus, the actors from the second movie will not be anywhere close to the age their characters are supposed to be. Though Villeneuve’s comment did not provide significant insight as to what exactly he is planning to do casting-wise for Part Three, he did not say that he would be recasting members of the Dune: Part Two.

The cast includes several actors on the younger side, including Zendaya, Chalamet, and Pugh. If Villeneuve “know[s] how to” handle the time jump with the current cast, this suggests that he will look at alternatives other than recasting the parts.

What Denis Villeneuve Might Do Instead Of Recasting

The Film Has Access To Copious Modern Technology

The technology of the current era offers a lot of opportunities for Dune: Part Three to age up its characters in place of recasting. One method Villeneuve might turn to is using CGI or makeup to age Paul, Chani, and the other young leads as needed.

On the contrary, the director would have the option to alter the time jump to make it shorter. Given how strong the Dune movies’ visuals have been thus far, my one hope is that whatever method Villeneuve chooses does not undermine the series’ visual language.

The Answer To This Problem Exists In The Dune Universe

Dune’s Mythology Includes The Key To Longer Life

While the Dune 3 time jump seems like it provides a challenge with the casting of the third movie, the sci-fi elements of the Dune universe could allow for a very easy solution. The drug Melange (also known simply as Spice) is a big part of the Dune universe and use of it has a number of benefits, with everything from heightened awareness to space travel. However, it is also discussed in the books that regular use of the drug can also extend a person’s life.

There are characters in the Dune books that are confirmed to be hundreds of years old thanks to the use of Spice. Also, while Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV was presented as being close to his older age in the movie (as played by Christopher Walken), the books describe him as looking youthful despite being in his 70s. While Dune 3 might need to include some exposition, it could be explained that Paul Atreides and other characters have seemingly aged very little because of their use of Spice.
