Horror Fans Think They’ve Found A Clue To Scream 6’s Ghostface Identity

Horror fans break down the new Scream 6 trailer and notice a hidden Dario Argento reference that may be a clue to Ghostface’s identity.

The Scream 6 trailer may be hiding a clue to the Ghostface killer’s identity in plain sight, eagle-eyed fans have noticed. The film, which is the sixth in the Scream franchise, will follow Scream 2022’s core cast of survivors – namely Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) and Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) – to New York City. There, a new series of Ghostface killings will begin, which they attempt to put a stop to by joining forces with previous survivors Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), along with a new policeman character played by Dermot Mulroney.

Today, Paramount Pictures released the official Scream 6 trailer, revealing major details about the film’s new Ghostface killer, who threatens to be different and more powerful from any previous killer in the franchise. Among other things, this Ghostface can be seen brandishing a gun and is revealed to be keeping a shrine to the previous killers from the past five films. While the identity of this new killer will remain a mystery until the release of the film on March 10, several fans have taken to speculating who could be the killer based on a very pointed clue: the character played by Tony Revolori is wearing a shirt that references the 1971 Dario Argento film Four Flies on Grey Velvet. What The Four Flies On Grey Velvet Reference Could Mean for Scream 6

Tony Revolori in Scream 6

The reason the Four Flies on Grey Velvet reference feels pointed is that the Argento classic has a plot that feels eerily similar to overarching themes from the Scream movies. The film follows a man who is attacked by his stalker, who he accidentally kills, at which point a new masked killer arrives on the scene, attempting to frame him for the murder. This plot has echoes in the original 1996 Scream, which follows a new series of slayings on the anniversary of the death of the mother of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who wrongly accused her mother’s lover Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) of the murder.

While that in and of itself could be the reason the shirt is included, a clue from a recent Scream 6 poster that was released online points in the same direction. That design featured various billboards in Times Square, one of which reads “Wrongly Accused: The Musical.” Considering the fact that the other billboards contain phrases specifically tuned to the plot of Scream 6 (including a reference to Blackmore University, the college that the trailer seems to reveal Gooding’s character now attends), the idea of someone being wrongly accused will probably come back in a major way in the new sequel.

Most likely, that person will be Sam Carpenter, who is secretly the daughter of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), one of the original Ghostface killers. Should her secret have gotten out, she may be accused of orchestrating the murders from Scream 2022, giving more urgency to her investigation into the new killer in Scream 6. As for the Four Flies on Grey Velvet shirt, it may merely be a clever reference to this plot point, or it could possibly point to the fact that Revolori’s character is one of the killers this time around, as some fans have suggested.
