How MODOK Made His Way Into Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

How MODOK Made His Way Into Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Exclusive: Director Peyton Reed explains how they incorporated MODOK into Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and reveals his ties to the Ant-Family.

Peyton Reed reveals how they found a place for MODOK in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and discusses his connection with the Ant-Fam. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania takes place in the Quantum Realm, where the heroes meet Kang the Conqueror and MODOK, both of whom are dangerous threats. Corey Stoll, who played Darren Cross (also known as Yellowjacket) in Ant-Man, is returning to the franchise to portray MODOK in the new movie.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Reed explained how they were able to finally bring MODOK to live-action MCU with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. He also revealed what sparked the idea for MODOK to be the key to Kang knowing about the Ant-Fam. Reed also broke down MODOK’s connection to the Ant-Fam.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

I want to talk about MODOK because it’s a character I’ve been anticipating for a while now in the MCU, and he’s such a strange but fun character. What inspired his connection to the Ant-Fam in this film?

Peyton Reed: We talked a lot about, as we were developing the story, how MODOK has been waiting in the wings for a while. Stephen Broussard would know this better than me, but there have been conversations for other movies about, “Can MODOK fit in here? What would that look like in live-action?”

But then we hit on an idea as we were gonna bring our family into the Quantum Realm and in contact with Kang. How could Kang know about the Ant Family? And then it occurred to me, “What happens to Yellowjacket at the end of the first Ant-Man?” It dawned on me, and I pitched the idea to Stephen Broussard and then to Kevin and we ran with it. I remember calling Corey Stoll and talking to him about, “What if this happened?” And him giggling on the other line, like, “If you guys do that, I’m in.” He loved it, because he’s a comics nerd, too.

We were able to do it, and I’m thrilled. It’s such a crazy, crazy thing to have in this movie.

MODOK In Ant-Man 3 Reveals What Happened To Yellowjacket

It was a surprise when Marvel first announced that Stoll would be returning to the Ant-Man franchise, but this time as MODOK. However, Reed has shed light on how Stoll is the key to bringing MODOK into the MCU by connecting it to Yellowjacket’s original ending in Ant-Man. When Ant-Man defeats Yellowjacket and saves Cassie, the villain is sent into the Quantum Realm, and it was assumed that he perished.

Through the Ant-Man films, it has come to light that people can survive in the Quantum Realm, with Scott Lang and Janet Van Dyne being prime examples. This begs the question: if Yellowjacket didn’t die, what happened to him? It seems Reed has found a unique way to explore that question in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania through MODOK.

Did Yellowjacket become MODOK because he was experimented on by Kang, or was it a result of going subatomic? While Hank Pym warned about the dangers of the Quantum Realm, both Scott and Janet returned relatively unscathed. This could be an opportunity to see a much darker outcome. MODOK may be key to Kang’s plan, warning him about Ant-Man and likely acting as a weapon for the Conqueror as he once again faces off against the people he likely blames for his banishment to the Quantum Realm. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will explore the Quantum Realm and another side of its dangers as Darren Cross’ fate is finally revealed.
