Recently, Joe and Anthony Russo addressed whether they would employ the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in making Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The directors are among the most successful within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. These films, three of which made over $1 billion at the box office, are among the most lucrative and best received in the franchise, so it’s no surprise that Marvel brought the Russos back.
However, the film landscape is different in 2025 compared to 2019. A huge factor in that is the wider acceptance and capabilities of AI. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Anthony clarified their stance on using AI while making their next Avengers films. He stated that “we have to approach AI the same way we approach all technological innovations.” Per Anthony, “it’s potentially a valuable tool, but it’s the kind of tool that artists always have to remain in control of.” He explained that “there’s going to be some valuable role in the creative process and the filmmaking process” for humans.
Using AI can be a controversial topic because it is seen as a shortcut or a way to replace creatives such as visual effects workers, writers, and even actors. As a result, hearing that the Russos are using AI in their films could be met with trepidation by Marvel fans. Per ComicBook.com, their production company, AGBO, has openly used AI in their projects, even hiring Dominic Hughes to oversee its use as their Chief Scientific Officer.

According to the Russos, AI will only be used “to enrich the creative process.” Without specifics, it is unclear the extent to which the directors will utilize AI in their Avengers duology, but they do not mean for it to completely replace the human element of filmmaking.
AI cannot replicate the creativity of an individual; however, it is not inherently a bad thing. The Russo Brothers utilizing AI to make their films could mean more innovative experiences for audiences to enjoy, and their mentality that the technology is merely a tool implies that they will still place emphasis on human involvement. Only time can tell how the use of AI will impact Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, but one thing is clear: the Russo Brothers are correct to assume AI will permanently change the film industry.
