Jim Gaffigan’s Iconic Super Troopers Scene Only Took Two Hours To Film

EXCLUSIVE: Jim Gaffigan shares the quick process behind one of Super Trooper’s best-loved scenes, and his appreciation for the franchise and creators.

While speaking with Screen Rant about his upcoming science fiction dramatic comedy film Linoleum, comedian and actor Jim Gaffigan revealed the challenge – or lack thereof – behind his iconic appearance in the 2001 comedy Super Troopers. Largely considered one of the highlights of the cult classic comedy film, Gaffigan’s cameo was popular enough to warrant his return in 2018’s Super Troopers 2. Ultimately, the scene in which Gaffigan appeared became arguably the single most enduring moment from the first Super Troopers, and has followed the actor around to this day.

The scene in question is of course Super Troopers‘ iconic ‘Cat Game’, in which the officers pull someone over and see how many times they can sneak the word ‘meow’ into their procedural routine. While surprisingly innocuous for an R-rated comedy like Super Troopers, The Cat Game is relatable to anyone who has been fed up with or sick of a job, which is perhaps why it has stood up to the test of time. The inside joke between the officers in Super Troopers is answered perfectly by Gaffigan’s performance as Larry Johnson, who has a hard time not laughing along. As impressive as the long life of the scene is, just as noteworthy is the fact that it only took two hours to film. Here’s what Jim Gaffigan had to say on the subject after being asked if Larry Johnson may return in the rumored Super Troopers 3 (Spoiler: he doesn’t know):

It’s so funny, because the lifespan of Jay [Chandrasekhar] and those Broken Lizard guys, and my relationship with them, [has been so long]. Going back, this was the 90s, and I was doing commercials. Now we’re old men, but at that point commercials was a decent living. It’s different now. They’re a bunch of dopey-looking white guys, and I’m a dopey-looking white guy, and we would compete for these roles. It was one of those things where I was friendly with them, but I essentially worked on that movie for literally two hours, and people will still meow at me to this day.

How Might Jim Gaffigan Fit Into Super Troopers 3?

Proper comedy sequels tend to be rare, and trilogies even more so, but rumblings of a Super Troopers 3 in the works beg the question of whether Jim Gaffigan will reprise his role as Larry Johnson for another round of the Cat Game. Gaffigan himself doesn’t seem to know the answer, especially as it’s unlikely there would be a Marvel-style level of secrecy around Super Troopers 3 keeping him from hinting at his involvement. That said, something else Gaffigan mentioned during his Screen Rant interview may point toward the likelihood of Larry Johnson’s return:

I’m so happy for them, and [for] the success surrounding that and their other projects. I’ve done cameos in some of their other stuff. They’re such a fun group, and that’s a very interesting thing to see comedy as community played out like that.

“Comedy as community” is a beautiful sentiment that speaks to the close-knit nature of Jay Chandrasekhar and the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, who have made a number of hilarious comedy movies together and show no signs of stopping. Because of the group’s tendency to continue including their friends in their projects, it does seem like a Super Troopers 3 would include Gaffigan if at all possible. Hopefully, more news will come sooner than later.
