Following a shocking new DC Universe report regarding DC Studios, the future is now unclear for several Justice League actors. James Gunn and Peter Safran are officially taking the DCU (formerly known as the DCEU) in a new direction following the launch of DC Studios on November 1. They are working on a multi-year plan that will finally reconnect the franchise across film and television.
However, it turns out the DCU might be facing bigger changes than many expected. In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios is reportedly shifting gears on the DCU, with several Justice League actors having their futures unclear at this point. Despite appearing in Black Adam and reportedly filming a cameo for The Flash movie, Henry Cavill’s Superman may not get his Man of Steel 2 after all. There are also no current plans for additional Aquaman movies with Jason Momoa after his 2023 sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Gunn and Safran are expected to present their 10-year-plan next week to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
What About Henry Cavill’s Big Superman Return?
While Cavill’s return as Superman in Black Adam became one of the biggest aspects of the film, the actor made it clear that it was just a taste of what is to come for his version of the DC icon. Even though it hadn’t been confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios, reports were coming out that they were in early development on Man of Steel 2 and looking for screenwriters. According to the latest report, The Flash movie director Andy Muschietti was hoping to helm Cavill’s next Superman feature, with the intention of making it different from Zack Snyder’s style.
Even though Man of Steel 2 may not take off, it’s not necessarily the end of Cavill’s Superman. Since he is not signed on for any additional DC projects at the moment, it could always mean that Gunn and Safran have yet to negotiate with the star. It’s always possible that once they have presented their plan to Warner Bros. Discovery and get it signed and approved, they may start negotiations if they intend to use Cavill’s Superman in future installments.
How The New DCU Can Keep Previous Actors Around
Still, there is also the larger concern of what will happen to the other Justice League actors following this DCU report. With Momoa’s Aquaman currently not having any additional films lined up after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, it seems likely the hero could be leaving the franchise. However, there are rumblings of Momoa taking on a new part in the DCU. Things are less hopeful for Ezra Miller and The Flash, especially due to Miller’s legal controversies this year; it remains to be seen if this report will affect them too. Despite Wonder Woman 3 being shelved as well, it’s possible Gunn and Safran will still use all the Justice League actors in the DCU rather than reboot entirely but just have them star in different projects to begin with as they get deeper into the franchise.
