Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean receives a positive update from franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer after the actor said it was canceled.
After the actor said it was canceled, Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie receives a positive update from producer Jerry Bruckheimer. It was first reported in 2020 that Disney was developing two Pirates of the Caribbean reboots – one written by franchise veteran Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, and another female-led spinoff with Robbie attached to star and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson penning the script. Bruckheimer, who produced all five Pirates of the Caribbean movies starring Johnny Depp, was also attached to both projects. However, the second ship appeared to be sunk last month when Robbie said her spinoff had been scrapped.
Now, less than a month after Robbie said her Pirates of the Caribbean movie was canceled, it appears to not be entirely dead after all. During a recent interview with Collider, Jerry Bruckheimer said Robbie’s spinoff has not been canceled, but is on the back burner as they prioritize the other Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Read what Bruckheimer said below:
I think that that script will come forward at a certain point. We developed two different stories for Pirates and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.
What Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean Could Be About
Bruckheimer’s update on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is incredibly exciting for those anticipating Robbie’s spinoff and were disappointed when the star said it had been canceled. Very little is actually known about the spinoff other than it would be female-led, but “not totally female-led,” according to Robbie. The Wolf of Wall Street and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star is attached to lead the cast, while Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Karen Gillan has also been rumored to star. With Hodson writing the script, they are likely taking a Birds of Prey approach by having several strong female characters surrounding Robbie’s lead pirate.
There are no official plot details for Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean, though the star has promised “lots of girl power” and expressed confidence in Hodson’s ability to bring a “key female element to that world.” The most important female element in that equation is obviously Robbie, who based on her recent comments, is under the impression that Disney is no longer interested in the female-led reboot. With Bruckheimer reaffirming interest on behalf of the studio, it will be interesting to see if Robbie is still game, or perhaps the female-led Pirates of the Caribbean reboot has lost its lead star.
An in-demand actor like Robbie certainly isn’t going to sit around waiting forever. As her Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been relegated to the back burner, the Academy Award nominee has remained busy with David O. Russell’s Amsterdam and Damien Chazelle’s Babylon in 2022, and Greta Gerwig’s buzzy Barbie movie and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City slated for next year. There are many who would love to see the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise added to Robbie’s list of upcoming projects, though right now, it’s unclear when that will officially happen.
