Marvel Confirms MCU Phase 3 Fan Theory About Setting Up Phase 5

Marvel Confirms MCU Phase 3 Fan Theory About Setting Up Phase 5

Marvel Studios has finally confirmed one of Phase 3’s biggest Easter egg mysteries, setting up Phase 5’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Marvel Studios has officially confirmed a major fan theory from the MCU’s Phase 3 which has now set up Phase 5’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Although Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) briefly explored the Quantum Realm in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, a blink-and-you-miss-it Easter egg was left unaddressed for years. Now, producer Stephen Broussard has confirmed that the Easter egg was directly setting up the upcoming Ant-Man film.

In an interview with Inverse, Broussard confirms that there was indeed a subatomic city featured in the background of the Quantum Realm when Hank Pym shrinks down to save his long-lost wife Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer). While Marvel fans have had their theories ever since 2018, it has never been confirmed by Marvel Studios in any context (until now):

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

“We had put some little Easter eggs when they found Janet that could hint to more life and more civilization down there, that’s these DVD freeze moments, if you want to look for them. I think people have found it before, there’s a moment when Hank finally rescues Janet. And they are making their escape back up to our world in his quantum pod, his sled there. And in the background, you see sort of this domed city, this glass city that kind of mixes in with the background there, but it’s oddly architectural…so it’s like, wait a second: Did I just see a bubble of a cell or something microscopic? Was that architectural? Was that actually a city?”

Broussard goes on to add that the subatomic city seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp was essentially a marker in Phase 3 Marvel Studios wanted to lay down as something they could capitalize on in the future given the opportunity. Now, that opportunity has come with Phase 5’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Ant-Man And The Wasp Set Up Quantumania Years Ago

Prior to this reveal, there were several theories about the Quantum Realm’s subatomic city and who might live there. The most popular idea was that the structures seen in the Quantum Realm might have been the headquarters of the TVA from Marvel’s Loki series. This was primarily due to the Quantum Realm’s role in the ability to travel the timestream as seen in Avengers: Endgame.

However, given Marvel Studios’ confirmation that the subatomic city was an Easter egg meant to set up a third Ant-Man film, it looks as though the city first seen in 2018 is in fact Chronopolis, Kang’s primary fortress seen in the trailers for Quantumania. This also supports the idea that Janet van Dyne and Kang have quite a long history as has been implied in trailers as well. It’s very likely that Janet wouldn’t have survived without Kang and this subatomic civilization prior to her escape with Hank.

The subatomic city Easter egg in Ant-Man and the Wasp is a perfect example of Marvel Studios laying the groundwork for the MCU’s future without knowing if they’d be able to make said future actually happen. As such, the payoff is very satisfying and exciting now that a third Ant-Man film is actually happening, and the Quantum Realm can finally be explored. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set for release on February 17th.
