New Across The Spider-Verse Image Gives Fresh Look At Spider-Man 2099

A new image has been released for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, showing off Oscar Isaac’s highly-anticipated Spider-Man 2099 in all his glory.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is hitting theaters on June 2nd, and audiences have just gotten a sneak peek at Spider-Man 2099’s appearance in the film. After making a surprise cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s post-credits scene, the Oscar Isaac-voiced Miguel O’Hara is set to play a major role in the upcoming sequel. Hailing from the distant year of 2099, O’Hara appears to be a key figure in Spider-Man’s connection to the multiverse, but if the film’s latest trailers are to believe, he might not see eye to eye with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and his friends.

Although filmmakers have been open about some details in Across the Spider-Verse, Miguel O’Hara’s role therein has been kept quite vague. However, just three months ahead of the film’s release, the official Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Twitter account revealed a dazzling look at the character’s design. Check out the brand-new image below:

The image shows off Spider-Man 2099’s epic costume in all its glory as he charges forward into battle with an unseen foe. The superhero appears to be aboard a fast-moving object, perhaps a train, and is flanked by an easy-to-miss second hero, who appears to be Ghost-Spider (Hailee Steinfeld).

Is Spider-Man 2099 A Friend Or Foe In Across The Spider-Verse?

In the film’s trailers, it appears as Across the Spider-Verse‘s Spider-Man 2099 has a grudge against Miles Morales for some reason or other, calling the character’s morality into question. Trailers appear to have framed Miguel O’Hara as an antagonist to Miles’s story in the sequel, marking a stark departure from the character’s comic book counterpart. Previously, Spider-Man 2099 has always been portrayed as a heroic character, in line with other Spider-Man variants, suggesting that his fight with Miles in Across the Spider-Verse will be far more nuanced than the trailers make it seem.

While the battle between Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara is certainly poised to be a highlight of the film, the Spot will be the true antagonist of Across the Spider-Verse. The lesser-known supervillain is capable of opening interdimensional portals, making him a perfect addition to the multiverse-traversing franchise. Moreover, his appearance in Across the Spider-Verse suggests that he may be a bigger threat lurking in the backdrop of Miles’s battle with Miguel O’Hara, using the fallout of their rivalry to achieve his own nefarious goals.

It is most likely the case that Miguel and Miles will begin Across the Spider-Verse as allies, only to suffer a falling out at some point in the film. Recent trailers reveal that Miguel O’Hara very much thinks of himself as “the good guy, even if his methods prove controversial. He and the other Spider-Man variants are most likely facing a threat, possibly Spot, that utterly terrifies them, leading them to make choices that they wouldn’t otherwise make. If Miles and his friends don’t adhere to their methods, it could explain their falling out. Whether they can repair their relationship in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse remains to be seen.
