One Scream 6 Star Accomplishes Incredibly Rare Box Office Record

Scream 6 star Jack Champion has just accomplished an incredibly rare box office feat. Champion, who plays new character Ethan Landry in the slasher sequel, is a rising star who was first brought to broad attention in December 2022 thanks to his role as Jake Sully and Neytiri’s adopted human son Spider in the James Cameron sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. Although he has previously appeared on television and in independent features, the only other major wide release where he has a credited role is the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover Avengers: Endgame, where he plays a kid on a bike who Ant-Man encounters once he gets out of the Quantum Realm.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the opening weekend of Scream 6 is now projected to rake in a domestic total of $43.5 million, knocking out Creed III to become No. 1 at the domestic box office. This means that Champion now has the distinction of having every single major wide release in his filmography reach No. 1. Two of the films he has appeared in also number among the Top 3 highest-grossing films of all time.

How Long Can Jack Champion Keep This Streak Going?

Champion’s 100 percent success rate at hitting No. 1 will have to wane at some point as the young actor’s career continues. However, it is entirely possible that he could keep it going for several years to come. He is already slated to appear in the upcoming sequels Avatar 3 and Avatar 4, which are more or less guaranteed to reach No. 1 on their opening weekends even if their potential diminishing returns prevent them from outgrossing their predecessors.

However, one major upcoming Champion film has the potential to be a stumbling block for this streak. The first is coming up rather soon, the June 2 release Retribution. The action film, which teams star Liam Neeson with Servant director Nimród Antal, is incredibly likely to fall behind that weekend’s other release Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse unless the animated Marvel film shifts its current release date.

If the schedule shifts, Neeson’s bankability as an action star could be the buoy that keeps Champion’s record alive. However, even if the New York-set Scream 6 becomes the final film in his box office hot streak, it’s hardly a bad title to go out on. Though it likely won’t become one of the highest-grossing films of all time like his other two projects, it had the strongest opening weekend of the entire Ghostface franchise and is likely going to spawn more sequels off the back of its incredible success.
