Passion Of The Christ 2 Mocked With An Avalanche Of Fake Titles

The Passion of the Christ 2 is being mocked with an avalanche of fake titles in response to news that it could start filming in the next few months.

The possibility of The Passion of the Christ 2 finally starting principal photography has inspired troves of Twitter users to poke fun at the religious epic sequel with a slew of fake titles. Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ was released in 2004 to a polarizing reception. Many called it a religious and holy experience, while others decried the excessive violence and what they saw as elements of antisemitism. Nonetheless, the film, which stars Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth, was a box office hit and grossed over $612 million worldwide, including over $370 million at the domestic box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time, a title it retains to this day.

A recent report claims that shooting for The Passion of the Christ 2, which Caviezel has said will be the “biggest film in world history,” will be getting underway in the next few months. While this news will excite some and frustrate others, there is a large contingent of viewers on Twitter who took the opportunity to comment on the sequel and offer up their own perfectly predictable yet still comical ideas for the sequel’s title. While Twitter users are having great fun brainstorming the new title, they may be disappointed to learn that the sequel already has the working title: The Passion Of The Christ: Resurrection. After at least six years of development, it seems Gibson might be ready to get back on set for the long-awaited sequel. There has yet to be any announcement related to the film’s potential theatrical release date, but the recent report claims shooting is expected to start sometime in mid-2023. It is worth mentioning, though, that only a handful of sites have picked up the Passion of the Christ 2 story, so the validity of it is unclear.

Joining Gibson on the creative team will be writer Randall Wallace. The two have been frequent collaborators over the years, including on Gibson’s magnum opus Braveheart, for which Wallace wrote an Oscar-winning screenplay, and We Were Soldiers, which Wallace directed and Gibson starred in. The lead role of Jesus of Nazareth, which nearly went to Daniel Day-Lewis for the original, will once again be taken on by Caviezel. The fact that Caviezel wants to return is at once impressive and surprising considering that during filming of The Passion Of The Christ, he was struck by lightning, knocked in the head by the cross, and used his real blood in a scene.

The other stars currently slated to return are Maia Morgenstern in the role of the Virgin Mary, Christo Jivkov as John the Apostle, and Francesco De Vito as Saint Peter. It remains to be seen if The Passion of the Christ 2 will go for the same authentic route as the first one with the dialogue entirely in Hebrew, Latin, and the dead Aramaic language that Jesus and his peers likely spoke. The sequel’s working title, The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, seems indicative of which part of the story will be covered, namely the three days leading up to the Resurrection of Jesus and the Resurrection itself. However, whether it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen, though this new report has certainly stirred up some intrigue online.
