Paul Feig’s Next Horror Project With Sydney Sweeney Is Darker Than A Simple Favor

Paul Feig’s Next Horror Project With Sydney Sweeney Is Darker Than A Simple Favor

Paul Feig’s upcoming horror movie starring Sydney Sweeney is darker than A Simple Favor. The 2018 mystery, an adaptation of Darcey Bell’s novel, focuses on the disappearance of Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) and features some surprising twists, as vlogger Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) begins to uncover the truth. Diving into Emily’s background, it is revealed that she was responsible for the deaths of her father and twin sister, Hope, whose corpse was wrongly identified, but she holds even more secrets, many of which are unearthed in her absence.

Throughout A Simple Favor, Emily’s villainous behavior becomes more transparent, and because the film contains a lot of humor, her wrongdoings may seem less dire, but she’s still presented as a corrupt character with a troubling history. That was indicated by her mother calling her evil and sending her away, and Emily (or Faith) and Hope being mistreated by their father. The threatening encounters between Emily and Sean (Henry Golding), and Stephanie becoming strangely infatuated with her life, further exemplify how dark the movie can get, despite its comedy.

The Housemaid Is Darker Than A Simple Favor

The Sydney Sweeney Movie Is Next On Feig’s Slate

Following Another Simple Favor, Feig’s next project will be The Housemaid, which is based on a Freida McFadden novel. The psychological thriller stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie, a woman who becomes employed as the maid for a well-off couple. Along with Sweeney, the cast of The Housemaid includes Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Megan Ferguson. Set to premiere on December 25, the movie will incorporate several turns and feature story details and characters that may be darker than those in A Simple Favor, as Millie learns about the family she’s working for.

Feig spoke with ScreenRant at SXSW, where he was there for Another Simple Favor, and revealed that he has finished shooting The Housemaid and will soon begin editing, adding that “from what we shot, it came out great.” He went on to praise Sweeney and the other actors, and explained that he considers A Simple Favor to be a thriller with humorous elements. Feig also noted that while The Housemaid is darker, we’ll find our moments in there. Read Feig’s comments below:

We wrapped production on it about two weeks ago, and I’m really excited about it. I go into the editing room on Monday, we come out at Christmas and so far, from what we shot, it came out great. We’re going to cut it together and see how it cuts together.

But between Sydney and Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, [we have] just an amazing group of people to work with, and we had the best time. I look at the Simple Favor movies as being thrillers too. They’ve got kind of a black comedy bed to them. The Housemaid is definitely a heavier story, but we’ll find our moments in there.

Our Take On The Housemaid Compared To A Simple Favor

The Movie Could Have A Different Kind Of Tone

The Housemaid should be an exciting release for audiences familiar with the novel or Feig’s previous work, since he is largely known for comedies. A Simple Favor having comedic elements woven through it made for an entertaining, genre-blending watch, but it will be interesting to see if Feig goes darker on his next project. Considering the story that unfolds in The Housemaid, it makes sense for the movie to be different from A Simple Favor, though it can still include some humor.
