Pierce Brosnan & Helen Mirren First Starred Together 45 Years Ago

Pierce Brosnan

and Helen Mirren

first shared the screen decades ago, and now, the dynamic duo will reunite for two new projects in 2025. The Long Good Friday premiered in 1980 and is regarded as one of the best British gangster movies of all time. The movie ranks high in both Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren’s careers, the crime thriller earning an impressive 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Long Good Friday also showcased a different side of Brosnan that was later paralleled in his groundbreaking role as James Bond.

Mirren and Brosnan have not co-starred since this collaboration, but the duo are now set to appear in one feature film for Netflix, and a new Guy Ritchie series for Paramount+, later this year. Interestingly, one of these projects perfectly parallels an earlier role, but both offer incredibly promising premises that make their success far more likely. What is certain, watching Brosnan and Mirren team up again will be a delightful experience and, not to mention, incredibly rewarding after their 45-year hiatus from sharing the screen.

Mirren Took The Lead In The Long Good Friday While Brosnan Had A Minor Role

The premise of The Long Good Friday focuses on one individual’s ploy to take control of multiple crime groups across London, in order to fund his redevelopment of a derelict area as a potential Olympic venue. Brosnan and Mirren’s stories are connected, but the duo share minimal screen time together in The Long Good Friday. Brosnan’s character, an unnamed IRA operative, holds a grudge against Victoria’s (Mirren) husband, as he attempts to affiliate with the American Mafia. As a series of bombings in London begin to kill his men, Harold takes any measures necessary to uncover the spy within his organization.

While Mirren and Brosnan are significant to the narrative, Brosnan’s role in The Long Good Friday is very small. In 1980, the actor’s career was only beginning to take off, making The Long Good Friday Brosnan’s first feature film. Whereas Mirren had already achieved significant momentum in her career by 1980. Of course, Brosnan has since gone on to become one of the most prominent on-screen presences. However, it is a shame that Brosnan was only just establishing himself within the industry at this time, as he was not given the chance to really excel here.

45 years after Brosnan and Mirren’s conflicting roles in The Long Good Friday, the pair will reconnect in Netflix’s The Thursday Murder Club. The release date has not been confirmed, but the film based on Richard Osman’s novel is still in pre-production. According to Variety, the duo will share the screen with Ben Kingsley, and the movie is being written and directed by Chris Columbus. Although Brosnan and Mirren’s roles are undisclosed, the pair will be on equal footing in The Thursday Murder Club and their character will be incredibly different from The Long Good Friday.
