Robert Pattinson’s New Sci-Fi Movie Hits Major Global Milestone Despite Projected Box Office Loss

Robert Pattinson’s New Sci-Fi Movie Hits Major Global Milestone Despite Projected Box Office Loss

Robert Pattinson has emerged as a bankable star, but he isn’t immune to box office flops. Though the English actor rose to fame on the back of the fantasy franchises Harry Potter and Twilight, he has recently delved into daring sci-fi films, starring in Claire Denis’ 2018 sci-fi horror High Life and Christopher Nolan’s ambitious time-bending thriller Tenet. Recently, Pattinson took on multiple roles in a sci-fi film from the writer and director of the 2020 Best Picture winner, Parasite.

In the past few years, Pattinson has become a bankable star at the box office. Though Twilight was based on a popular book series, the franchise pulled in over $3.36 billion worldwide across five films. Beyond his role as Edward Cullen, Pattinson headlined the DC blockbuster, The Batman, which made over $772 million at the box office, becoming the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2022 and securing a sequel. While Pattinson’s new sci-fi film has collected several box-office milestones, it’s still projected to lose money.

Mickey 17 has hit a major global milestone despite its projected box office losses. Written and directed by Bong Joon Ho (Parasite), based on the novel by Edward Ashton, the sci-fi film follows Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a man who joins a space colony in the year 2054 as an “Expendable,” a disposable worker who is cloned every time he dies for scientific research. Mickey 17‘s cast also includes Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.

Now, after playing in theaters for nearly a month, Robert Pattinson’s new sci-fi movie has passed a major global milestone. This is despite it being projected to lose between $75 and $80 million during its theatrical run due to its $118 million budget.

What Mickey 17’s Box Office Milestone Means For The Movie

It’s Still Projected To Lose Money

While Mickey 17‘s global milestone is a notable achievement, as only three other Hollywood movies have made over $100 million in 2025 so far, it’s still projected to lose money during its theatrical run due to its sizable $118 million budget. Generally, a movie must make about two and a half times its budget to become profitable, as theaters take half of the ticket revenue, and marketing expenses are not included in the production budget. In turn, Mickey 17‘s break-even point is estimated to be around $300 million, which the sci-fi film should fall well short of.
