Smile 2 Could Be On The Horizon As Director Signs New Studio Deal

Smile 2 Could Be On The Horizon As Director Signs New Studio Deal

Smile 2 could be coming soon now that director Parker Finn has inked a new studio deal. The 2022 film, which starred Sosie Bacon as an emergency room therapist who becomes haunted by a disturbing entity that appears in the guise of smiling people, was adapted from Finn’s own short film Laura Hasn’t Slept. Originally meant to be a Paramount+ release, the $17 million feature was sent to theaters on the back of strong test screenings and became the highest-grossing horror film of the year, earning more than $200 million worldwide.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Finn has just finalized a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the release of Smile. Details of the deal have not been divulged beyond the fact that Finn will be largely creating projects in the horror genre. However, the report indicates that “a Smile sequel is one of the priorities.”

What Could Smile 2 Be About?

It seems only natural that Smile should get a sequel. Finn’s earth-shattering directorial debut was not only a box office hit but a critical success as well. The film holds a Certified Fresh 80 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 77 percent score from audiences as well.

However, the efficiency of the entity at the center of Smile means that not a lot of characters are left alive at the end of the film. The most likely character to follow in the new film would be Kyle Gallner as Joel, the cop who Bacon’s character Dr. Rose Cotter enlists to help her stop the menace. Gallner’s enthusiastic response to the news of Finn’s deal would seem to indicate his interest in returning.

However, there are several other directions that Smile 2 could go. The first would be following a new character being tormented by the entity, either before or years after the events of the original film. The second, likely more interesting, option would be to follow Rose’s nephew, who was traumatized at his birthday party when the entity’s manipulations caused her to arrive with her cat’s corpse wrapped up in a gift box and thus may already be haunted by the Smile entity in some way.
