Tom Hanks Reveals If He Will Ever Retire From Acting

Fresh off his latest film, A Man Called Otto, with a few more roles lined up, Tom Hanks reveals if he ever plans on retiring from acting.

A Man Called Otto star Tom Hanks reveals if he ever plans on retiring from acting. The beloved actor broke through in his mid-20s with the 1984 film Splash, which led to a series of critically acclaimed comedies for Hanks, including The Money Pit, Big, and A League of Their Own. He eventually moved into dramas like Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and Cast Away, cementing himself as one of the most accomplished and admired actors over his four-decade-long career. With Hanks now nearing 70 years of age, questions have started to arise about when he plans on putting his profession behind him.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

During a recent interview with Variety at the New York premiere of his new movie A Man Called Otto, Tom Hanks was asked if he ever plans on retiring. The beloved actor cast doubt on the prospect, saying he doesn’t want to retire. Read his full response below:

“No, I don’t have any desire [to retire]. I’m not working for the sake of working. I’m in a very lucky position. It’s got to be fabulous. Rita and I talk about it all the time, which is there’s only two reasons go to work: It’ll be good or it’ll be fun. And if it’s neither one of those, I’ll stay home until the cows come on. I don’t need to do anything.”

Every Upcoming Tom Hanks Project

Tom Hanks’ new movie A Man Called Otto has already premiered in select theaters on December 30 before its upcoming wide release on January 13. The film, which is a remake of the 2015 Swedish film of the same name, follows Hanks as the titular widower whose life is reinvigorated when a charming young family moves in next door. A Man Called Otto‘s reviews have been mixed, though they are largely united in their praise of Hanks’ performance as a dispirited widower, who continues his recent string of older and gruffer characters in News of the World, Finch, and Elvis.

With Hanks confirming that he has no plans to retire, this chapter of his career could continue for many years to come. His upcoming roles include Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, in which he is part of a massive ensemble, and the Robert Zemeckis film Here, which is set in a single room. In addition to acting, Hanks will seemingly continue producing projects, such as Masters of the Air, a World War II miniseries in the same vein as Band of Brothers and The Pacific, which he also produced with Steven Spielberg.

The revelation that Hanks has no plans to retire should be reassuring. While other esteemed actors of his generation, such as Brad Pitt, have expressed interest in hanging it up early, Hanks knows that some of his best work could come during his latter years. For instance, Anthony Hopkins recently became the oldest actor in history to win an Oscar at 82. With A Man Called Otto the latest to hit theaters, Tom Hanks’ senior years are hopefully filled with similar success.
