The trailer for Smoking Causes Coughing offers a glimpse at the bizarre Power Rangers-inspired film. Smoking Causes Coughing is the new film from Quentin Dupieux, the director behind Rubber, Wrong Cops, and Mandibles. The French film stars Gilles Lellouche, Anaïs Demoustier, Vincent Lacoste, Jean-Pascal Zadi, Oulaya Amamra, and Adèle Exarchopoulos, and follows the Tobacco Force, a team of vigilantes fighting to save the world.

What To Expect From Smoking Causes Coughing

Dupieux is known for writing and directing bizarre films that often don’t connect with the mainstream. He first gained notoriety with 2010’s Rubber, a movie about a psychic tire that rolls around a small town murdering people. Rubber succeeded on its odd premise, which drew people in based on spectacle rather than overall quality, much like Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey has done in recent months.

Smoking Causes Coughing looks to continue Dupieux’s eccentric style. The humor on display in the trailer, along with the creatures and story, suggests that the director is up to his same tricks, though with a possible broader appeal in that the movie may attract new audiences. By featuring a Power Rangers-style team, it opens the door to viewers who enjoy that setup, stoking curiosity about what would happen if the Power Rangers were an inept group of misfits.

For audiences familiar with Dupieux’s work, the trailer for Smoking Causes Coughing may seem tame compared to his other films. Still, he’s a filmmaker who will surprise viewers no matter how prepared they feel. For those unfamiliar with Dupieux’s over-the-top films, Smoking Causes Coughing may be far more bizarre than the trailer lets on.
