We Would Like To See It

Sonic the Hedgehog
franchise writers Josh Miller and Patrick Casey express interest in seeing some non-Earth adventures in a future sequel. Based on the hit Sega video game character, director Jeff Fowler’s first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released in 2020, introducing Ben Schwartz as the titular blue speedster. The film, which also stars Jim Carrey as the villainous Dr. Robotnik, was a hit, and it was followed by two sequels, both of which take place mostly on Earth. The most recent installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, hit theaters in December and has been a massive success.

During a recent interview with CBR, Miller and Casey address the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise’s future, specifically touching on how the setting could evolve. According to the writers, there is a desire to take Sonic to new, fantastical locations from the games, specifically Green Hill. Check out comments from Casey about Sonic’s potential future travels below when asked about the possibility of Green Hill making an appearance:

We almost put a sequence like that into Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and then ended up not having space for it. But we definitely know that there are other worlds and these more fantastical zones, and we would like to see it, so we assume the audience would like to see it as well.

For Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the story was all about all this military stuff and it was inherently Earthbound. But possibly in the future, we might get out into some more fantastic places.

What New Locations Would Mean For Sonic The Hedgehog 4

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been a major financial hit thus far, and its worldwide box office stands, as of writing, at $210 million. The film has been so warmly received that Paramount has already confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is in development, and that it will hit theaters at some point in 2027. Though plot details for the fourth film are being kept under wraps, it certainly seems possible that Sonic will be traveling to new places.
