Karate Kid: Legends promises to be one of the most unique installments, but when will viewers be able to see it both in theaters and at home? The 2025 release will be the sixth movie in the franchise, which kicked off in 1984 with The Karate Kid, which followed teenager Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) being mentored in martial arts by his apartment’s handyman Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). The movie was followed by three sequels and a 2010 reboot, which was set in Beijing and followed maintenance worker Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) teaching Detroit transplant Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) kung fu.
The upcoming Karate Kid: Legends will mark the first time that Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han will appear together onscreen, combining both branches of the franchise as they work to train new karate kid Li Fong (Ben Wang). While Macchio has reprised his role multiple times, in the first two sequels to the original movie and the streaming sequel series Cobra Kai, this marks the first time that Jackie Chan has appeared in the franchise since originating the role of Mr. Han 15 years ago. The cast of Legends also includes Joshua Jackson, Aramis Knight, Wyatt Oleff, and Ming-Na Wen.

Karate Kid: Legends Releases In Theaters On May 30, 2025
It Will Have An Exclusive Theatrical Debut
The new Karate Kid movie is set to arrive in theaters soon, premiering on May 30, 2025. It is set to debut in the United States and Canada on the same weekend as the new A24 horror movie Bring Her Back. The two movies are targeting very different demographics, so they probably will not be competing directly with one another, though Legends will still have to weather the sophomore weekends of the blockbusters Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which debuted over Memorial Day weekend.
When Will Karate Kid: Legends Release On Streaming?
It Should Have A Streaming Home By Fall 2025
Although Karate Kid: Legends will have an exclusive theatrical window at first, it will eventually arrive on streaming. Because Sony inked a deal with Netflix in 2021 that their theatrical releases would come to the streamer in the first pay TV window, it is set to join that platform’s library at some point after its theatrical premiere. While its exact streaming release date is unknown at the time of writing, the precedent set by previous Sony releases offers some insight into how long it might be before Legends begins streaming on Netflix. While the animated superhero blockbuster Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is an outlier at 151 days, even major hits and IP-related titles such as The Equalizer 3, Anyone But You, and It Ends with Us generally arrive on streaming between 122 and 123 days after their theatrical premieres. Many of them even began streaming four months to the day after their debut. While Sony’s early 2025 releases have had shorter windows, it seems more likely that the new Karate Kid movie exists in that higher tier, so Legends may be set to arrive on Netflix sometime around September 30, 2025.
When Will Karate Kid: Legends Release On Digital?
It Should Hit VOD Sooner Than Netflix
In general, movies arrive on video on demand for purchase and rental a considerable amount of time before their streaming debuts. This allows the releases to continue directly turning a profit as they transition out of theaters, especially because they are usually listed at premium prices when they first become available on digital platforms such as Fandango at Home, Prime Video, and Apple TV. While the official VOD release date is unknown for the next installment of the Karate Kid franchise, its arrival on digital platforms should be no different from other major releases.
A common price for the digital purchase of a movie that has newly arrived on VOD is $19.99.
While Sony movies such as Heart Eyes, One of Them Days, and Tarot took 25 days to premiere on VOD, the average wait time is 38.7 days, while outliers like Across the Spider-Verse have taken as long as 67 days. This means that the VOD release date for Karate Kid: Legends could land some time between June 24, 2025, and August 5, 2025, though it will likely be closer to July 15, 2025.
