Why Bring It On Sequel With Original Cast Is Taking So Long Explained

Gabrielle Union, who starred in the cheerleading comedy classic, Bring It On, explains why a sequel with the original cast has not been developed.

Over two decades after the release of the successful teen cheerleading film Bring It On, Gabrielle Union explains why there has yet to be a sequel developed featuring the original cast. The film follows two fictitious rival high school cheer squads preparing for a national competition, a narrative that gained its cult classic status by offering a humorously subversive depiction of the intensity and interpersonal complications involved in competitive high school cheerleading. Bring It On prompted the widespread fame of actors Kirsten Dunst and Union, who played Torrance and Isis, respectively, the captains of rival squads, the Toros and the Clovers. The original film was followed by many direct-to-video sequels and television films that did not feature the original cast.

Speaking to Variety, Gabrielle Union explains why a sequel to Bring It On with the same production team and the cast has yet to be developed. Union confirms that she has been in talks to join a sequel while alluding to the often unpredictable process of getting a film greenlit. Check out what she had to say below:

“We’ve been developing a sequel forever. But for folks who don’t exactly understand how long development can take in Hollywood, that could be five minutes or 50 years.”

While it remains hopeful that a direct Bring It On sequel features the original characters, the cheerleading comedy’s cast members have gone down very different paths in the 23 years since the film’s release. Dunst went on to achieve global stardom after acting opposite Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, the most commercially successful film of her career. She has since starred in a string of award-winning psychological thrillers and independent dramas, including 2011’s Melancholia and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog. Meanwhile, Union has primarily appeared in movies and series catered towards younger audiences and families in recent years.

Despite the amount of time that has passed since the release of Bring It On, many of the actors are also hopeful they will get to revisit the absurdity and intensity of the Toros and Clovers cheer squads in an eventual sequel. In 2020, just weeks after Union and Dunst both confirmed their interest in a Bring It On sequel at a panel, Union shared on The Late Late Show with James Corden that a sequel with the original movie’s cast will happen. However, two years later, Union backtracked the claim, acknowledging that Dunst’s Oscar nomination for The Power of the Dog might make her more likely to focus her creative efforts on more dramatic projects for the time being. There is no concrete update on the potential sequel, though Union continues to express interest in it.

Since her career breakout in Bring It On, Union has remained a household name by starring in numerous projects, but in recent years, she mostly appeared in family-oriented films and series, including the Disney remake of Cheaper By The Dozen. This trend in Union’s career is set to only continue with her return to The Proud Family in its sequel series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. She will also appear in season 3 of Apple TV+’s true-crime series Truth Be Told. Despite the wishful thinking for a sequel, Bring It On is still a cult classic from the 2000s that popularized the whole prospect of cheerleading movies.
