Wicked Part 1 Will Now Release An Entire Month Earlier

Wicked: Part One has its release date updated, with the film now set to release sooner than its previous Christmas 2024 date. The film will be the first of a two-part adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name, which explores the lives of the witches of Oz prior to the events of The Wizard of Oz. Wicked gained popularity after being adapted into a musical stage play, which will act as the basis for the upcoming film adaptation.

According to Deadline, Wicked: Part One will release sooner than expected, with its release date now scheduled for November 27, 2024. The Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo-led film were originally supposed to come out on December 25, 2024. With its new release date, it appears the movie will instead arrive in time for next year’s Thanksgiving weekend. The release date for Wicked: Part Two remains unchanged for December 25, 2025.

Why Wicked: Part One’s New Release Is A Promising Sign

With Wicked: Part One moving up its release date, it appears that production on the film is likely continuing strong behind the scenes. Erivo, who will star as Elphaba Thropp, the character who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, previously detailed the level of focus and commitment production has required. With a release date now scheduled for one month closer than previously anticipated, Erivo’s commitment to the project likely means it will be completed quicker than anticipated.

Wicked: Part One will adapt the first half of Maguire’s story about the witches of Oz, featuring a variety of talented actors who will bring the story of Elphaba to life. Grande will play the powerful Glinda, while other cast members include Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Furthermore, Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu also steps into the director’s seat for Wicked: Part One and Wicked: Part Two.

Given how popular Wicked‘s stage adaptation continues to be, Wicked: Part One has many expectations to live up to, which the talented cast and crew seem capable of handling. Despite the new release date, the film is still over a year away, meaning there’s plenty of time for more details about it to come out. But, with what little is known about Wicked: Part One, it appears the film will be a faithful adaptation set to capture the same feeling as the original novel and musical.
