3 Body Problem star Eiza González reveals when production on the Netflix series will begin, along with her excitement to see the second novel being brought to the screen. Adapted from Liu Cixin’s novel series by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, the series follows a group of scientists coming together as the emergence of an extra-terrestrial faction pushes them to make world-altering decisions. In 3 Body Problem‘s cast, González plays Auggie Salazar, a genius in nanotechnology development and founding member of the “Oxford Five.”
While sitting down with ScreenRant during SXSW to discuss her now horror-thriller movie Ash, González opened up about the status of the Netflix series. Alongside sharing her own excitement at the series diving into the events of The Dark Forest, the second novel in the series, González stated that season 2 will enter production later this year, revealing that both she and the showrunners were eager to translate its plot to screen following season 1’s set-up. Check out the exchange below:
Eiza González: [Dark Forest] is the one! We’ve been talking about that one, being like, “That’s the one!”
ScreenRant: Can we expect to go into production anytime soon?
González: Yeah, very soon. Very, very soon. This year.
Dark Forest is my favorite book, and I’m very excited. I hate to say this because I think every part of a series is important, and this is no different to that, but definitely when we were talking about the books, the showrunners were like, “We just have to power through the first season to get to the real juicy part of the story and where it goes.”
And what a way to power through the first season. I mean, it was incredible, but I think that moving forward is [what] I’m truly excited for. I’m waiting eagerly to read these scripts. I’ve been hearing so much, and I’m getting the emails. I’m like, “Oh, my God! We’re back.”
What González’s Tease Means For 3 Body Problem Season 2
The Series Takes The Franchise Into Futuristic Frontiers
With 3 Body Problem season 1 concluding with humanity preparing to take a stand against the San-Ti with little more than hope to keep them going, season 2 is set to dive into the formation of their defenses against the impending invasion. As such, season 2’s adaptation of The Dark Forest will dive straight into the conflict and introduce many otherworldly concepts that season 1 only hinted towards, from cryogenic preservation to the coming war with the San-Ti and their spacefaring forces.

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem is far from the only adaptation of Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy.
It is likely that VFX work on season 2 will exceed what was done for the first season in order to capture the intergalactic warfare and the devastating events of the infamous Doomsday Battle. With this in mind, the post-production period for season 2 will probably be longer in order to capture the full scope of the novel’s events. However, with 3 Body Problem seasons 2 and 3 already renewed, it is clear that Netflix is committed to properly adapting the books and that the showrunners are keen to do the story justice.
Our Thoughts On González’s 3 Body Problem Season 2 Tease
The Second Novel Is A Major Step Towards the Central Conflict
Like many three-part series, the second chapter in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past novel series is a major shift in the series’ plot, bringing spectacle, heartbreak, and twists that upend the universe. As such, González and the showrunners’ excitement is understandable, as season 2 will bring the biggest spectacle yet in the series. With cameras set to begin rolling in 2025, the first glimpse of 3 Body Problem‘s next chapter will be coming sooner rather than later.
