Acclaimed Showtime Drama On Track For Network Record With Early Season 8 Development

Acclaimed Showtime Drama On Track For Network Record With Early Season 8 Development

A major development from a Showtime series sees it draw nearer to breaking a record. Showtime is a television network that launched in 1976, bringing a variety of movies and television shows to the air. They first began producing original shows in 1982 with the iconic children’s program Faerie Tale Theatre, which was hosted by The Shining and 3 Women star Shelley Duvall and featured the work of notable directors including Francis Ford Coppola and Tim Burton.

More recently, Showtime – which was rebranded as Paramount+ with Showtime in January 2024 when the libraries of the two services merged – has produced popular shows including the historical drama Masters of Sex, the Liev Schreiber crime drama Ray Donovan, the serial killer thriller Dexter, and the Toni Collette dramedy United States of Tara. Some of its newest offerings are the star-studded supernatural series Yellowjackets, which has been nominated for 10 Emmy awards and one Golden Globe, and the Dexter prequel Original Sin.

The Chi Has Received An Early Season 8 Development

The Drama Premiered On Showtime In 2018

The Chi season 8 has received a major update. The drama, which follows the lives of various residents of Chicago’s Southside, was created by Lena Waithe and debuted on Showtime in 2018. The cast of the series includes Jacob Latimore, Alex R. Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Michael V. Epps, Shamon Brown Jr., and Birgundi Baker. The Chi season 7, which is set to premiere some time in 2025, was officially renewed in May 2024 and had already wrapped production by October.

Lena Waithe had her breakout when she joined the cast of Netflix’s Master of None, a show for which she won an Emmy for writing the episode “Thanksgiving.”

Per Deadline, the writers room for The Chi season 8 has been opened. This has taken place before season 7 has premiered, and, in fact, before it has even received an official premiere date. This brings the Lena Waithe show closer to a major record because, should it be renewed for season 8, it will tie with Homeland, Weeds, and Dexter as the network’s second longest-running show ever, behind Shameless, which ran for 11 seasons between 2011 and 2021.

What This Means For The Chi

Its Outlook Is Good

While this update is good news for the Showtime drama, this this does not necessarily mean that The Chi will continue. Deals have not yet been put in place for the return of any of the Chi cast, so the fate of the series is still up in the air. But the fact that scripts are being prepared could mean that the show could be renewed at any time, potentially before the end of season 7, which itself was renewed more than a month before the season 6 finale aired on June 30, 2024.
