Trying has officially been renewed for season 5 on Apple TV+. Kicking off in 2020, the show chronicles a couple who, after struggling with infertility, decide to adopt children. In the process, the couple must get their lives together enough to convince the adoption panel that they are ready to be parents. The show was created by Andy Wolton, with Trying featuring a leading cast including Rafe Spall, Esther Smith, Sian Brooke, Oliver Chris, Phil Davis, Darren Boyd, and Ophelia Lovibond. Trying season 4 wrapped up last year in July 2024.
Per Apple, Trying has officially been renewed for season 5. There is not yet a production schedule or any release date information available for the fifth installment.
What This Means For Trying
The Series Has Been Well-Received Thus Far
Trying has received positive reviews throughout its four seasons thus far, which is likely a major contributing factor to the show’s renewal. The series holds a 95% average Tomatometer among critics and a 92% Popcornmeter among audiences. Seasons 2 and 4 even boast perfect 100% Tomatometers. One of the show’s early champions was ScreenRant‘s Kevin Yeoman, who called the season 1 “a charming British comedy” and said that the series had found its “ideal couple in Smith and Spall.” This positive reception is a good sign for season 5’s success.

Trying season 5 was renewed somewhat later than previous seasons of the series. The first three seasons of Trying came out in back-to-back years, but there was a two-year gap between seasons 3 and 4. With season 5 just renewed, it is unlikely that it will come out in 2025. But if the writers, directors, producers, and other team members come together quickly, it is possible that they could get another eight episodes together for the early half of next year. This would be welcome for audiences who have been enthusiastic about the show so far.
Our Take On Trying’s Renewal
Other Apple TV+ Comedies Have Not Been So Lucky Lately
Trying‘s renewal comes at an interesting time for Apple TV+. Earlier this year, the network cancelled the well-reviewed workplace comedy series Mythic Quest, and just today, they announced that the comedy Acapulco would be ending after season 4. On the other hand, they renewed Shrinking for season 3, and have now brought back Trying. As such, it is an inconsistent time for comedies on Apple TV+, but those that survive have been good ones that pack in both humor and heart.
