Avery’s pregnancy has been a central focus in Ryan Murphy’s cruise ship medical drama, where Max (Joshua Jackson) and a group of staff must navigate various emergencies miles away from the shore. In episode 8, Avery discovers she became pregnant after a threesome with Max and Tristan (Sean Teale), which brought complications to her life as she tried to decide her future.

The trailer for episode 14, “Hot Tub Week,” shared by TV Promos, sees Avery taking a paternity test. While the pregnancy drama revolves around three Doctor Odyssey characters, the big decisions all come down to Avery. In an interview, Soo talked about Avery’s journey this season, where she was forced to make some big life decisions that would have impacts on the rest of her life. With the baby reveal coming amidst the Odyssey’s scholarship, which would help Avery’s dream of going to medical school, the news is put her at a crossroads. The baby father’s reveal would no doubt be a major pivotal moment.

Soo also pointed out one of the strengths of the love triangle is how the three characters are consistently trying their best to be there for each other. Though the pregnancy came unexpectedly for all of them, there has been so much growth between them as they navigate the situations individually and together. Max is willing to stay home for the baby to support Avery’s dream, while Avery seems to have been leaning toward being with Tristan in previous episodes.

One thing that separates Doctor Odyssey‘s love triangle from other series is how unconventional it has been. In TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, a love triangle seems more about choosing one over the other. However, this may not be the case in the Jackson-led cruise ship series. Viewers have been waiting to know who the father of Avery’s baby is, but the reveal itself is far from the episode’s focus.

Even though Doctor Odyssey could end with season 1, it almost seems that the show doesn’t want Avery to make a choice. The official logline for episode 14 teases that Tristan and Max will again support Avery as she receives troublesome news. It’s unclear what she’ll find out, but it will bring the three even tighter together as a group despite Tristan and Max’s resistance against the idea of being in a throuple.
