Daredevil actor Charlie Cox discusses his experience playing Matt Murdock in the Daredevil show and weighs in on the change between Netflix and Marvel Studios. Charlie Cox has played Daredevil for ten years — four appearances over three years in Netflix’s three Daredevil seasons and The Defenders, and three appearances in three years across Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, and Daredevil: Born Again. While Cox’s Daredevil is now an official MCU hero, that possibility looked quite unlikely when Daredevil season 3’s ending seemed to be the definitive ending of the character’s journey back in 2018.
Speaking about his upcoming MCU series during the Daredevil: Born Again panel at FAN EXPO San Francisco 2024, Charlie Cox addresses Daredevil‘s cancelation by Netflix in late 2018. Cox compares Daredevil‘s cancelation to a break-up, recalling a “breaking up period” when he processed the news that the show wasn’t going to continue. Charlie Cox’s comments below:
“What’s weird is that in 2018 when the show was canceled, I suddenly had like breaking up period, like a mourning period. I was like ‘oh wow’. ‘Cause we thought we were going to do a season 4, and then that didn’t happen, and kind of overnight we got a phone call and it was like, ‘we’re done, it’s finished’. It felt like a break-up, a little bit, in a kind of a weird way. And then like all break-ups, of course we got back together.”
Charlie Cox also admits that his time as Daredevil will inevitably come to an end sooner or later. Cox voices his appreciation for the role and states that he’s now more accepting of the scenario where he hands up the cowl. Cox says,
“But now I’m aware there will presumably come a time where it really does stop happening… and the longer it goes on the harder it will be to let go of… But when I was at Comic-Con I was chatting with a couple of the Daredevil writers, comic team, and they’re getting ready to release a Daredevil comic that takes place when Matt Murdock is in his 60s, so I was like ‘oh okay, great, so we’ve got some time'”.
