The latest trailer has been released for Dear Hongrang, along with the release date reveal. The K-drama series is about a woman named Jae-i searching for her brother, going on a journey of self-discovery along the path. Dear Hongrang features a leading cast including Lee Jae-wook, Jo Bo-ah, Kim Jae-Wook, Park Byeong-eun, Uhm Ji-won, and Jung Ga-ram. It was written by Jin A Kim and its episodes were directed by Kim Hong-sun. Producers for the show include Steve M. Choe and Kyoung-Yoon Choi.

The trailer opens with a young boy calling out to his sister while the girl, running through the woods, calls back “Hongrang!” After this eerie opener, the show cuts forward several years, revealing that the all-grown-up version of the young girl, Jae-i, is still out searching for her brother, Hongrang. While men have been impersonating Hongrang for years, one person shows up insisting he is him, propelling Jae-i into further exploration. The end of the teaser revealed that the show’s release date is May 16.

This Show Is Part Of Netflix’s K-Drama Slate
In addition to setting up the basic plot premise, the trailer for Dear Hongrang teases what some of the main elements of the drama will be. The man claiming to be Jae-i’s missing brother is coy about his identity, at one point saying “I’m an imposter, or am I?” In order to prove he is the real Hongrang, he appears to have to endure a series of extreme tests. Some of this involves the character fighting people with swords, creating an action element to the series.
Hongrang is played by Lee Jae-wook, who also starred in the Netflix fantasy K-drama Alchemy of Souls.
Dear Hongrang is the latest in Netflix’s growing K-drama library. In February, the streamer announced plans for the release of 29 K-dramas and Korean-language movies. Some of these include returning worldwide hits like Squid Game season 3, but others, like Dear Hongrang, are new original series. So far, none of these releases have managed the same heights of success as the record-breaking Squid Game, but some (e.g. When Life Gives You Tangerines) have still done extremely well.

The Dear Hongrang trailer seems like a good balance of emotion and melodrama. Even this teaser features lines that are intensely worded, fitting well into the heightened drama that characterizes Korean popular media. This style will likely lend itself to compelling storylines, including suspense and interpersonal drama as this twisty story unfolds over the course of 12 episodes.
