Deli Boys season 2 gets an encouraging update from executive producer Jenni Konner. Created by Abdullah Saeed, the story centers on two Pakistani-American brothers after the death of their father and the unveiling of his criminal enterprise. The ten-episode comedy recently premiered on Hulu to positive reviews, dropping all of its episodes in a binge-release model. The cast of Deli Boys includes Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, Poorna Jagannathan, Alfie Fuller, and Brian George.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Konner was asked about whether there are plans for Deli Boys season 2. Although the executive producer noted that it is too early to say and that there wasn’t a “huge mega-plan” for what could come next, she did note that the first installment ends on a cliffhanger. In the quote below, Konner encouragingly mentions there are some ideas the writers’ room might turn to if the crime comedy is renewed:
What’s always fun in any writers room is that in season one, you pitch things that are so great and you’re like, “that will be great in a season two.” It’s too early. We don’t have some huge mega-plan, but we do have this storage of really fun, weird ideas that may or may not emerge. We left it on a huge cliffhanger. We could end anyway we feel like. It’s like, who did this thing? Who blew up the deli? We have all of these ways to go. It will be fun to figure out what to do with these boys.
We also know in so many fun, new ways what these actors are good at, and what is a super funny energy for them. Those guys are really funny together. Or the Maaliks, we intended to kill them all off, and we just fell in love with them. So it’s always fun to figure out what’s great [on-screen]. In Girls, we were like, “Ray (Alex Karpovsky) and Shoshana (Zosia Mamet) are so funny together. Let’s keep that going.” It was one scene that we were like, they have such funny energy together, and we wrote to it. That’s one of my favorite things about writing and having the good fortune of having a show that keeps running.
What It Would Mean For Deli Boys To Get Renewed
It May Get A Boost From Reviews (But Viewership Is Important)
Deli Boys enjoyed a generally warm reception from critics, with a 94% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. It adds up to a fairly robust 7.6/10 average, which puts it well above the needed amount to be considered “Fresh” on the site. The performances and storytelling were praised in various reviews, though some took issue with the comedy’s occasional tonal mismatch. Still, as is often the case with new shows, some combination of critical praise and viewership is needed to keep a series going. Good reviews alone aren’t enough.

New Hulu and Disney+ sitcom Deli Boys features a familiar face for many viewers. But how is this role similar to Poorna Jagannathan’s previous one?
Financial considerations are also, at times, added to the necessary checklist. However, keeping in mind that the Hulu Original is a new comedy, that is less of a concern than an established show, which tends to cost more. That leaves the issue of viewership as the determining factor for whether the story continues after the Deli Boys season 1 ending. It will be important to watch whether the series appears on any of the streaming charts in the coming weeks, especially Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10.
Our Take On Deli Boys Returning For Season 2
It Deserves A Chance To Come Back
It would benefit streaming services to be patient with new shows. Hacks season 4, a comedy on the Max streaming service, recently announced an April premiere date. Though it received glowing reviews and awards attention, the series likely would never have found its audience in the same way if it had been quietly cancelled overnight after one season. Investing in a show could really pay off. It may well do just that for Deli Boys, if Hulu gives it the chance.
