Ahead of her Doctor Who return, Millie Gibson’s upcoming PBS drama The Forsytes has been renewed for a second season before the first season has had its release date confirmed. Gibson made her debut in Doctor Who season 14 as Ruby Sunday, the first companion of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor who hoped to find the truth about her parent’s identity. Adapting the novel series penned by John Galsworthy, which explores the lives of an upper-middle-class English family across several generations, The Forsytes is the third major television adaptation of the source material.
While PBS Masterpiece has yet to issue a release date for The Forsytes, Deadline reports that the series has already received a season 2 renewal. Gibson stars in the series as dancer Irene Heron, partner to Soames Forsyte, who will be played by Titans star Josh Orpin, with Danny Griffin, Tuppence Middleton, Francesca Annis, Stephen Moyer and Jack Davenport set to portray the rest of the central family. According to Deadline‘s sources, the PBS Masterpiece and Channel 5 co-production will film its second season in the summer of 2025.
What The Forsytes’ Renewal Could Mean For Millie Gibson
The Star Is Making Major Strides Internationally
While Doctor Who helped propel her into international recognition, Gibson was already a recognized and accomplished actor within the UK prior to her casting in 2022. Having starred in several dramas and stage shows from 2017 to 2018, the actor was cast as troubled youth Kelly Neelan in the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street from 2019 to 2022, earning several awards for her performance. However, 2025 may prove to be one of Gibson’s biggest years yet in her career.

Gibson is confirmed to reprise the role of Ruby Sunday in Doctor Who season 15, despite her and the Doctor having parted ways at the end of season 14, so that she may get to know her recently rediscovered birth mother. Tt is unclear how she will factor into the Time Lord’s own travels through space and time, but promotional material has seen her taking charge of facing alien threats and alongside UNIT. As such, alongside the release of The Forsytes, 2025 can offer Gibson an opportunity to show her talents and range across several genres to a global audience.
Our Thoughts On The Forsytes Season 2 Renewal
The Series Is One Of Several Ongoing PBS Masterpiece Period Drama Co-Productions
The Forsytes receiving an early season 2 renewal is an optimistic sign for the series’ future, as it shows a clear intent from both PBS Masterpiece and Channel 5 that they see it as an asset. While PBS has been more tight-lipped on the show’s future, Channel 5 themselves have celebrated the series as a welcome addition to their catalog alongside fellow co-production All Creatures Great And Small. As such, should the series succeed across its two seasons, Gibson could have a starring role for many years to come.
