Warning! SPOILERS ahead for Severance season 2, episode 8.Following Severance season 2, episode 8’s reveal of Harmony Cobel’s past with Lumon Industries, actor Patricia Arquette explained her character’s conflicted relationship with the company. Arquette’s character has been a major villain in the Apple TV+ series since its first season, antagonizing Mark (Adam Scott) and his fellow innies while also being fiercely devoted to Kier and his principles. Severance season 2, however, has shown Harmony in conflict with Lumon, first with her firing and now as the show reveals more about her history with the company.
Speaking with Variety, Arquette explained why her character feels conflicted about Lumon, pointing towards Harmony’s grief over her mother’s death and the strong influence Lumon had over her growing up.
“I think Harmony has a deep conflict about this company. Her mom was a rebel, and her mom was angry at Lumon. And some of that that I think is also within Harmony. Harmony never got to have that kind of mother love. The organization separated kids from their parents, so she didn’t get that kind of maternal bonding. And then when you have a drug addict parent, you’re never going to get it, because they’re disconnected in that kind of a way.
“The place itself, it’s very enlightening about Harmony’s inner landscape. This was the norm — this kind of coldness, this kind of strangeness. These were the proletarian of that time. These were the early incubators. This place was the incubating space for Lumon. And ether is the drug of forgetting. It in itself feeds into the chip.
“I think a lot of people see Harmony as a bad guy — now she’s going to confront her own bad guy, her aunt, and this cold place where her mother died. And she didn’t get any closure, she didn’t get to say goodbye. This cold room when her mom died alone. And then you have to say goodbye to people, and you will never get closure with them. They’re not capable, and it just wasn’t meant to be that way.
“So I think she’s mourning that when she’s in that room. But it was really nice to be able to see the set designer and the props department, and everybody who made these spaces that we’ve been talking about since the first season.”
What This Means For Harmony In Severance Season 2
A Potential Team-Up Between Mark & Her Could Spell Lumon’s Downfall
The ending to Severance season 2, episode 8 has Harmony taking a call from Devon, who reveals to her that Mark has been reintegrated, and agreeing to meet with them. It’s inferred that Harmony agrees to the meeting because she’s interested in Mark’s reintegration, but there will likely be more to it than just that. Episode 8 sheds light on Harmony’s past with Lumon, revealing how the company was responsible for separating her from her mother, while also leading to her mother’s death. As Arquette mentions, this pain creates a point of contention with Lumon, and it could be reason enough to ally with Mark to take the company down.

Severance season 2, episode 8 takes place solely in the town of Salt’s Neck, begging the question of how it connects to Lumon and the overall plot.
Despite the grief and pain caused by Lumon, Harmony has been devoted to the company and the teachings of its founder, Kier. That began to change, though, when Lumon fired her after season 1’s ending. Abandoned by a company she spent her life working for has been a tipping point for Harmony. Along with revealing how her childhood was influenced by Lumon, episode 8 also reveals Harmony as a key creator of the company’s severance procedure. As such, she likely knows the best way to harm the company, and working with a reintegrated Mark could prove devastating to Lumon.
Episode 8 Was Important In Revealing More About Harmony
Finally learning more about why Harmony is the way she is made Severance season 2, episode 8 an important entry. It not only revealed the indoctrination that led her to become a devotee of the company and Kier’s teachings, but also how Lumon abused her in spite of that devotion. This led to the complicated relationship Arquette speaks of, and helps to further explain why it took so long for Harmony to finally accept how bad Lumon actually is.
