Newly-announced Harry Potter
TV show star Nick Frost responds to his casting confirmation as Hagrid. After eight successful films from 2001 to 2011, J. K. Rowling’s beloved book series is now set to make the jump to the small screen in a new HBO show. The Harry Potter TV show cast has been widely reported on over the past few months, but it was just recently confirmed that Frost, who is best known for movies like Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007), will be playing Hagrid, the Hogwarts groundskeeper previously played by the late Robbie Coltrane.
In a new post on Instagram, Frost addresses his confirmed casting as Hagrid in the Harry Potter TV show, sharing a photo of himself posing with a copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The actor, who uses Hagrid’s “You’re a wizard, Harry,” quote from the book to convey his excitement, expresses his gratitude for getting the opportunity to play the part. Frost also directly addresses Coltrane in his post, promising that he “won’t let you down.” Check out Frost’s post and caption below:
You’re a wizard, Harry!!!
Thank you for trusting me with such a loyal, gentle and courageous half-giant like Rubeus Hagrid. Robbie, I promise I won’t let you down.
What This Means For The Harry Potter TV Show
Robbie Coltrane Set A High Bar
The eight Harry Potter movies were all successful critically and commercially, and the cast that was assembled is considered a major reason for this. Coltrane, especially, was widely celebrated as Hagrid, and it’s clear that Frost recognizes the big shoes that he is filling. Coltrane made his debut as Hagrid in The Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001, returning for all seven sequels. Audiences can expect, then, that Frost will play a role in all seasons of the HBO show, with each season expected to adapt the events of one book in the series.

Our Take On Nick Frost’s Harry Potter Casting
Frost Is A Great Choice For This Key Hogwarts Character
Though some of the announced castings have been divisive, Frost as Hagrid is a decision that seems to have been welcomed with open arms. Some of Frost’s most well-known and celebrated roles have been as lovable goofballs, setting him up for success as Hagrid, a gentle half-giant who is sometimes a source of comic relief.
Hagrid is an especially important figure in the early novels, not just welcoming Harry into the world of wizards, but welcoming audiences as well. While many who watch the show will already have watched the movies, some may not have, and Frost could be just the actor to help usher them into this story. It will be interesting to see who else ends up getting cast in the Harry Potter TV show, but Frost, at the very least, is a welcome addition.
