House Of The Dragon Season 3 Filming Start Gets Hopeful Update From Otto Actor

House Of The Dragon Season 3 Filming Start Gets Hopeful Update From Otto Actor

House of the Dragon Otto Hightower actor, Rhys Ifans, offers a filming update for season 3. Season 2 of the epic fantasy series premiered in June 2024 and garnered largely positive reviews from critics, though it did see a slight dip in reception. Even still, season 2 was a ratings hit for HBO and Max, with the finale netting the highest streaming viewership for the entirety of the Game of Thrones prequel. HBO was confident in the show’s future, however, as they confirmed House of the Dragon season 3 prior to season 2’s premiere.

While speaking to ScreenRant about his upcoming movie Inheritance, Ifans offers a small update on House of the Dragon season 3. He reveals that he doesn’t know the exact date yet, but “there’s something brewing“, and that he expects filming to start “soon this year while joking that fans will be able to watch a new season in “about 25 years time.” Check out what he said below:

I don’t know. I don’t know, but I can smell the sulfur. [Chuckles] There’s something brewing. I can say, yeah, they start shooting soon this year, so I’m sure you’ll be able to watch it in about 25 years’ time. [Chuckles]

Season 3 Doesn’t Have A Production Start Date Yet

Showrunner and co-creator of the Game of Thrones prequel Ryan Condal previously revealed in August 2024 that House of the Dragon season 3 was being written, and the plan was to go into production in early 2025. In January, Condal shared a vague filming schedule, pinning the production start time to “first quarter 2025” and an expected wrap time in fall of the same year.

House of the Dragon season 3 won’t debut for a while, but these great TV shows will tide viewers over until the Game of Thrones prequel returns.

Ifans’ comment indicates that there’s still currently no confirmed start time for filming, even though it’s already January. The actor’s vague update also changes from the more concrete timeline for House of the Dragon season 3 to “soon this year,” hinting at a potential small delay on the horizon. The lack of a start time also suggests challenges and obstacles may have occurred during pre-production.

It Might Receive A Small Delay

With the tension between the Greens and the Blacks escalating all the way to the end of season 2, the upcoming season is expected to include a lot of high-intensity battles, which could be one of the challenges the production faces that require more time. Condal has teased “utter madness” in season 3, and after two seasons of teasing a full-blown war, the show is finally going to get into the good part.

Even if things all go according to plan, fans will likely have to wait until at least 2026 to watch the highly anticipated House of the Dragon season 3. Ifans’ ambiguous update is no doubt a little bit disappointing. The lack of a confirmed start time not only means delay, but it can potentially lead to schedule conflicts and difficulties coordinating filming with actors, which could lead to a big delay. Fingers crossed that the Game of Thrones prequel won’t make fans wait for “25 years” for another season.
