Jeremy Renner Addresses Hawkeye Season 2 Story Rumors

Jeremy Renner responds to some of the story rumors about Hawkeye season 2, as the fate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show remains unclear. After having been part of the MCU timeline since his debut in 2011’s Thor, Phase 4 saw Hawkeye finally get his own solo project, sharing it with Marvel’s Kate Bishop. However, despite the Hawkeye season 1 finale leaving the door open for future stories, Disney+ has yet to renew the series for another season.

On the latest episode of the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Renner spoke about his MCU career and some Hawkeye season 2 story rumors. Without giving too much away, Renner hinted that there may be some truth to some of them, while also addressing what has been going on with the show. Renner’s latest comments seem at odds with his previous statement that he’d turned down Hawkeye season 2 due to the salary offer being too low, but this is likely due to him recording this interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast before his salary comments made the rounds.

Josh Horowitz: There are rumors that there is going to be another season of Hawkeye and it might be kind of Raid-style, single location, [with] Clint’s brother, any truths to these rumors?

Jeremy Renner: Maybe some of that’s true. We got into it a little bit, sort of storywise and stuff, in doing another season. Everyone’s interested in it – I’m like, ‘Yeah, of course man, I would not want to say no to that.’ I think there is a lot of ideas that they still got to figure out – I’m always game to do it, it’s a fun world and I love being part of it.

Based on Renner’s comments to Horowitz, it’s evident that he would love to continue the Hawkeye TV show. However, it’s also crucial to take Renner’s Marvel salary comments into account, as that may be partly holding Hawkeye season 2 back at this point in time. That is potentially one of the things Renner was alluding to in this interview when he stated that “I think there is a lot of ideas that they still got to figure out.”

While Renner couldn’t obviously confirm concretely about some of the Hawkeye season 2 story rumors, it wouldn’t be shocking if the MCU is potentially considering introducing Barney Barton, who is not only Clint’s brother in the comics, but also a villain. Not only would it be another way to tap into Clint’s background, but it sets up another complex villain dynamic similar to Hawkeye season 1, where Kate’s mother was involved in the criminal world. But until Disney+ goes forward with Hawkeye season 2, nothing is set in stone right now.

Hearing that Renner is still open to Hawkeye season 2, it would be amazing if the show got to continue while also expanding Clint’s role in the overall MCU. Having Renner also working with Hailee Steinfeld’s MCU heroine again would continue the great foundation they had in Hawkeye season 1. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will get closer to figuring out how to make Hawkeye season 2 happen sooner rather than later.
