More Suits characters are confirmed to return in season 1 of NBC’s LA-set spinoff

Suits LA‘s creator has officially confirmed the return of more original characters. The spinoff of the popular legal series recently premiered on NBC and Peacock on February 23 and will continue episodes weekly on Sundays. Focusing on a new law firm by Ted Black, Suits LA‘s cast features Stephen Amell, Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, Bryan Greenberg, and Troy Winbush. The original show’s star, Gabriel Macht, also reprised his role as Harvey Specter.

Per TVLine, Aaron Korsh confirmed that more original Suits characters will return for the first season of the LA spinoff. He stated definitively that at least one other character would appear. However, the creator would like cast members to “pop up as organically as possible.” He did not confirm “at what level” and which actors would return. Check out the full quote from Korsh below:

Harvey is not the only Suits original character that we’re going to see this season. There will be at least one other original Suits character. I’m not going to say at what level.

[I want old characters] to pop up, as organically as possible, and not flood the show with a parade of old Suits characters.

I know that’s what fans want, but I feel like if it’s just a parade of old Suits characters, it would sort of harm the new franchise and I don’t think it would do a lot of favors to the old franchise either.

Network TV Editor Ana Dumaraog, who wrote ScreenRant‘s review of Suits LA, had this to say in reaction to the news of more returning characters:

Seeing Harvey again is obviously a great treat for those who loved Suits (whether during its years on USA Network or more recently through streaming), but I worry that bringing more characters from the original show might only emphasize how different Suits LA is from its predecessor, and not in a good way (at least for now). It’s no secret that there was skepticism about the spinoff once it was confirmed that none of the Pearson Hardman crew would be series regulars. It also doesn’t help that the pilot has received rough reviews. Perhaps it’s better to get viewers invested in Ted Black and his new ensemble first to ensure Suits LA’s long-term success.

What This Means For Suits LA

The Appearances Will Probably Go Beyond Cameos

Korsh’s caution against oversaturating the show with former stars is a smart inclination, as cameos would be too much of a gimmick for audiences. Because the creator did not confirm “at what level” the original Suits stars would be performing, their roles could be anything from cameos to guest or recurring appearances. Because of his worry about creating “a parade of old Suits characters,” these roles are likely to be more significant than just cameos alone.

Suits LA Immediately Gives Stephen Amell’s Ted Black A Huge Advantage Over Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter

Ted Black is similar to Harvey Specter in many ways, but Suits LA episode 1 introduces one major difference between the two powerhouse lawyers.

Korsh didn’t spoil which Suits stars would be featured in the spinoff, but based on past comments, some are more likely to return than others. Meghan Markle has paused her acting career since her 2018 marriage to Prince Harry, while Patrick J. Adams might be booked for early production on the Yellowstone spinoff series, The Madison. On the other hand, Gina Torres might be freed up by the conclusion of 9-1-1: Lone Star, making her return more viable.

After all, the spinoff can only create so many off-screen recreational sports leagues before audiences find this connection overly convenient.

Based on the way Harvey was introduced to the series, Suits LA would also have to come up with realistic backstories for its lead characters, justifying their returns. The premiere revealed that protagonist Ted Black was a former prosector in New York at the same time that Harvey Specter was also working in the Big Apple. Korsh highlighted this point, saying that while they did not work in the same office, he came up with the idea that “both played in this prosecutors’ league baseball team,” which would have been a reasonable way for them to interact off-screen.

As such, it would seem that any Suits characters would have to come back in an organic way, based on character relationships. With Harvey already on the show, it is possible that someone could step into the story for Harvey-related purposes, giving Suits LA an easier in when it comes to including more characters. After all, the spinoff can only create so many off-screen recreational sports leagues before audiences find this connection overly convenient.

Our Take On The Suits LA Casting News

The News Could Further Upset Fans

It is hard to say whether casting original stars will help or hurt the spinoff. Suits LA has gotten negative reviews overall, getting a 34% Tomatometer and 37% audience Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant‘s Dumaraog gave the series 4 out of 10 stars, saying that “the spinoff is more representative of the worst parts of Suits — when storylines became too convoluted and dramatic to make up for Mike’s exit.” As such, it will be interesting to see whether the original cast returns will lead to improved audience perception or simply more undesirable comparisons to the original.

The current casting setup could also be conducive to attracting viewers without necessitating original cast returns. Once compared to Entourage by those involved, the series showcases the work of entertainment lawyers, and as such features celebrity guest star appearances as their high-profile clients. The likes of Patton Oswalt, Victoria Justice, and Brian Baumgartner are already confirmed to show up in episodes of Suits LA. Even as the show suffers with critics, these guest stars could draw in week-to-week audiences from those outside the Suits universe, creating less of a need for original star roles.

Suits LA continues weekly on Sundays on Peacock and at 9 pm EST on NBC.
