Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 In Talks With New Female Lead After Casting Donald Glover Replacement

Mr. & Mrs. Smith may have found its new Jane. The Prime Video series, which was created by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover, is based on the 2005 movie of the same name. Season 1 starred Glover and Maya Erskine as John and Jane Smith, a spy duo who pretend to be married. Although it is unclear if the characters are merely being recast or if season 2 will take on an anthology format, the lead roles in Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2 are being filled by different actors, with Anora star Mark Eydelshteyn already cast as John.

Per Deadline, the role of the new Jane Smith may be filled soon. Although music star Billie Eilish was approached to take on the role after making her acting debut in Prime Video’s Swarm, which was also co-created by Donald Glover, she will not be taking the role. Negotiations are now taking place for Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher to play Jane. This would involve joining the show for a one-year deal, so it seems that neither star would return for the possible season 3.

What This Means For Sophie Thatcher

Her Career Is Flourishing

Should Sophie Thatcher close the deal to join the Mr. & Mrs. Smith cast, this would mark her first television lead role since she first appeared in Yellowjackets in season 1, which debuted on Showtime in 2021. The only other role she has taken on the small screen since her debut on the popular thriller series is that of the cyborg Drash, who appeared in three episodes of the Disney+ Star Wars spinoff The Book of Boba Fett.

In Yellowjackets, Sophie Thatcher plays Teen Natalie, the younger version of the character played as an adult by Juliette Lewis.

Thatcher being in consideration for this major television role speaks to how well her career has been flourishing outside of Yellowjackets. In addition to her role in the Showtime series, which boasts a star-studded cast that also features Melanie Lynskey, Ella Purnell, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Christina Ricci, she has been taking on increasingly prominent movie roles. After playing supporting roles in The Boogeyman and MaXXXine, she starred in both the Golden Globe-nominated A24 horror movie Heretic and the 2025 sci-fi thriller Companion, which has already grossed more than $28 million against its $10 million budget.
