Netflix’s Extraction TV Spinoff Title Revealed By Exec

Netflix’s Extraction TV Spinoff Title Revealed By Exec

The upcoming Extraction spinoff show has received an official title. The recently announced Extraction show is the first spinoff of the popular Netflix movie series. So far, two movies have been released, and another sequel was confirmed to be in development in 2024. Both Extraction movies star Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary who is hired to rescue people from all over the world. Upon its release, the first Extraction movie became Netflix’s most-watched original film of all time, which made it clear that the series has franchise potential.

Not long after the Extraction spinoff series was officially announced, the production company AGBO’s Chief Content Officer Angela Russo-Otstot tells The Direct that it will be titled Mercenary. Russo-Otstot discusses how excited she is to begin work on a new story in the growing franchise. She reveals that it will be interesting to explore different mercenaries in the Extraction franchise, and also claims that the show will start production in September 2025. Read Russo-Otstot’s full comments below:

We have just announced a green light for a series called Mercenary, which is part of the Extraction universe and starring Omar Sy and we’re thrilled about that one.

It’s an exciting opportunity to pursue a long-form narrative that explores many of the same themes that the first two Extractions touched on will sort of come at a singular mission through multiple perspectives. And it’s interesting to see how different mercenaries will have different allegiances and agendas and will be forced to make certain decisions that may be helpful or harmful to others.

So we’re super excited about that one. Omar [Sy] is at the core of it. Glen Mazzara is show running it, who’s brilliant, and we start production in September.

Even though the series was just announced in February 2025, many details about the upcoming Extraction show are already known. Omar Sy, who starred in the show Lupin, as well as movies such as The Killer and Jurassic World, will lead the Netflix series. In Mercenary, Sy will play a mercenary who embarks on a mission to Libya to rescue hostages who are being held there. The series isn’t deviating too much from the formula that has worked for the Extraction movies. However, the episodic format will allow Mercenary to explore its characters on a deeper level.

Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction 3 Update Is Exactly What I Want From The Netflix Threequel

Chris Hemsworth has provided a positive update about his successful Extraction franchise, specifically the delayed third movie for Netflix.

The official synopsis for Mercenary teases that the series will examine the trauma the lead character’s line of work leads to. Other than Sy, no other cast members have been announced for the spinoff series. However, behind the scenes, it has been confirmed that the Russo brothers and Sam Hargrave are producing the show. The Russo brothers also produced the movies, both of which were directed by Hargrave. They will seemingly work on Mercenary as they also make progress on the upcoming Extraction 3, which is supposed to start shooting this year, as well.

Mercenary Should Be An Action-Packed Series

Mercenary is a simple yet effective title for the Extraction spinoff show. It is great to hear multiple updates about the series not long after it was announced. Since Mercenary is filming this year, there’s a chance it could release sometime in 2026, which is exciting. The Extraction movies may not be mind-blowing, but they are very entertaining films with incredible action sequences. Therefore, I am excited about Mercenary, the first spinoff of the Extraction franchise.
