New Prime Video Series Described As Religious Game Of Thrones Debuts With Moderate Rotten Tomatoes Score

Religion-based films and series are seeing an increase in popularity, spurred in part by the success of The Chosen. Created by David Jenkins, and focusing on Jesus Christ, the 2017 historical drama recently signed a deal with Amazon MGM Studios that will see an added focus put on spinoffs and expansions of The Chosen franchise. There have also been other narrative dramas which explore historical events from a particular lens.

Netflix has released several miniseries centered on historical figures, including a narrativization of the life of Moses. These one-offs have tended to succeed with audiences, topping the streamer’s charts and leading to discussion amongst audiences. Prime Video has gotten into the genre of faith-based dramas, with the recent debut of an occasionally brutal saga that’s been compared to a titan of television.

House Of David Recently Debuted Its Rotten Tomatoes Score

The Show Features A Large Supporting Cast

House of David recently debuted on Prime Video, hailing from creator Jon Erwin. The series is set during 1000 BC, following the mythical king David as a young shepherd anointed by the prophet Samuel to succeed King Saul. The eight-episode drama depicts Saul as falling out of favor with God because of his disobedience. But while Saul’s mental state declines, David has his own journey that’s marked by struggle, with the new Prime Video addition also delving into David’s face-off with Goliath.

The cast of House of David includes Michael Iskander as David, Ali Suliman as King Saul, and Ayelet Zurer as Queen Ahinoam, among others.

The score for House of David currently sits at 60% on Rotten Tomatoes with 5 reviews counted. The audience score is at 90%, though there are relatively few verified ratings. Both scores will fluctuate as more assessments are added. As it stands, three reviews lean positive while two lean negative. While the performances of the cast garner praise, there are some criticisms about pacing across eight episodes and how the story is told given that so many of the details are already well-known.

Our Take On House Of David

It’s A Different Take On The Subgenre

House of David, which will release the final episode of season 1 in May, has been compared to Game of Thrones. Though it’s a more unflinching take on a story that’s known the world over, particularly the showdown between David and Goliath, that may have a certain appeal for viewers seeking a bloody adaptation of David’s origin story and his fight with the towering figure known as Goliath.
