Official Ahsoka
concept art perfectly captures Ahsoka Tano and her Padawan, Sabine Wren. The epic end of Star Wars Rebels gave a hint of Ahsoka’s future as “Ahsoka the White,” but viewers wouldn’t get to understand her transformation until five years later. Surprisingly, they learned she had taken on Mandalorian Sabine Wren as a Jedi Padawan, an unexpected development that nevertheless gave the Ahsoka TV show a fun master-apprentice theme.
The Ahsoka steelbook includes gorgeous concept art by Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni, showing Ahsoka the White and her Mandalorian Jedi Padawan in action. One striking piece – shared by Cobalt – shows Ahsoka as a serene warrior, while the shorter Sabine looms beside her, aggression personified. It’s only a quick sketch, but it perfectly reveals the approach Filoni wanted to create in his show.
Dave Filoni’s Ahsoka Art Perfectly Captures Their Dynamic
It feels strange to see Sabine drawn in such an ominous manner, but it makes sense. This wasn’t quite the Sabine viewers were used to from Star Wars Rebels; she was older, and scarred by yet more tragedy. Sabine’s family had died in the Purge of Mandalore, and there were hints in the dialogue that she’d seen the tragedy coming – but been unable to stop it. Sabine’s journey as a Jedi was an uncomfortable one, not least because she wrestled with her attachment to missing friend Ezra Bridger.
This was most visible in one of Sabine’s most controversial decisions; to betray the entire galaxy, allowing Morgan Elsbeth the chance to find Grand Admiral Thrawn, all because it gave Sabine the same opportunity to find Ezra. Many viewers were appalled, and only a few were as forgiving as Ahsoka. Sabine’s master sensed the will of the Force in this, insisting that everyone was where they needed to be.
Our Take On Sabine’s Jedi Future
Sabine’s story as a Jedi has just begun; she learned to tap into the Force at last in the Ahsoka finale. It’s still uncertain whether she will be able to commit to the way of the light, given the mistakes she made along the way. She and Ahsoka Tano are currently stranded on the distant planet Peridea – a planet rich in the Force, with a legacy older than the Jedi Order itself. Sabine may well find herself facing unique challenges – and it remains to be seen whether she can overcome them – or her rival, Shin Hati, in Ahsoka season 2.
