Only Murders in the Building season 5 gets a significant filming update from executive producer Dan Fogelman and creator John Hoffman. Continuing the rhythms that the Hulu comedy has established for itself, Only Murders season 4 ended by solving one shocking death and teasing another. It also introduced a seemingly separate new mystery and a potential love interest for Charles (Steve Martin), although it could be the latest dangerous romance for the main character who has so far been unlucky with relationships.
While promoting his new Hulu series, the political thriller Paradise, Fogelman told TheWrap gave a status update on Only Murders season 5. In the quote below, Fogelman teased that casting news should be expected fairly soon. Hoffman, who created the mystery comedy with Steve Martin, mentioned that filming is planning to begin in March:
Fogelman: “I was just texting with Steve [Martin] and Marty [Short] and John Hoffman this morning. We can expect more big guest stars that’ll probably be announced sooner rather than later.”
What Only Murders Season 5 Means For The Show
A Beloved Doorman Was Killed In The Season 4 Finale
Before the seemingly gruesome murder of doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca) is revealed, the trio meets a new character. Charles, Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short) come across Sofia (played by Téa Leoni). She asks them to look into the disappearance of Nicky “The Neck” Caccimelio. Charles is intrigued by her. But the trio declines, explaining that they mostly focus on murders. That’s exactly what they get a short later, finding Lester dead in what sure looks like a pool of his own blood.

Only Murders In The Building Season 4 Finale Review: The Arconia Should Be Haunted By Now
The Only Murders in the Building season 4 finale is a rewarding end to its most personal case, though some of the cracks in the formula start to show.
Lester’s death dampens the happy mood of the wedding between Oliver and Loretta (Meryl Streep) and it’s confirmed to be a major focus of Only Murders season 5. The temptation, at this point, is to connect the introduction of Sofia with the murder of Lester. As often is the case with the seven-time Emmy-winning comedy, however, things aren’t what they first seem. In any case, Leoni will be back for season 5.
Our Take On The Only Murders Update
The Guest Stars Can Be A Bit Much
It’s hard to fault the Hulu series for wanting to continue a formula that has worked. It is one of the most consistent hits on streaming, regularly appearing in Nielsen’s Top 10 charts while also generally appealing to critics. But the influx of big stars into the Only Murders in the Building cast is distracting, including a clunky cameo from Oscar-winning director Ron Howard. It takes away, at least for me, some of the narrow focus and the underrated character actors that made the first season such a pleasant surprise. Still, on a positive note, new episodes are on track to be released later this year.
