The latest trailer has been released for Stick. The TV series is an upcoming sports comedy from Apple TV+ about a former golfer who, after losing his professional sports career, decides to take on the role of coaching a teenage prodigy. Stick features Owen Wilson in the lead role and has a supporting cast including Judy Greer, Peter Dager, Lilli Kay, Marc Maron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Parm Soor. The series was created by Jason Keller and features writers including Keller, Christopher Moynihan, Kate Fodor, and Esti Giordani. Stick will release on June 4.
Now, Apple TV has released the first trailer for Stick. The trailer begins with Wilson’s golfer character, Pryce Cahill, getting recognized by Mitts (Maron) in a bar. It is then revealed that he had a “full psychotic break on live TV.” The scene shifts to show that Pryce is still struggling in his personal life, dealing with a divorce from his wife. At a driving range, Pryce witnesses an impressive swing from a young man named Santi, who he believes could win the U.S. Amateur Championship. So, Pryce decides to take on the talented youngster as his project.
What This Means For Stick
The Show’s Ted Lasso Inspiration Is Clear
With the series Stick, Apple TV+ will lean into some of the roots of what has made their platform so successful: Ted Lasso. The Jason Sudeikis-led football series originated in 2020, and Ted Lasso season 4 has since been confirmed. Stick will substitute football for golf, but carries a lot of similar themes to the previous show. Like Ted, Pryce’s wife is filing for divorce, and he is feeling the weight of that. As Pryce grapples with his personal issues, he also deals with the prospect of coaching.
Tonally, Stick will straddle both drama and comedy. It introduces drama surrounding Santi’s father, who taught him how to play golf, but is also the reason he quit. The trailer heavily implies a family conflict, but the exact nature of this father-son relationship has yet to be revealed. At the same time, Wilson adds a sense of levity to the role that will maintain the show’s comedy.
Our Take On The Stick Trailer
This Is Great For Wilson
Stick has the potential to be a great role for Wilson. The actor has not had a plethora of major roles in the last few years, with his last TV part being a main character on Loki. As the lead in this Apple TV+ show, Wilson will have the chance to explore the depths of his new character. So far, Stick looks like it will give Wilson the opportunity to dig into a breadth of emotions, making it an exciting part for the actor.
