RUUH x JOH unplugged: Talk fame, friendship and finding new music | Exclusive

In a generation ruled by house-party bangers and EDM-fuelled nights, RUUH and JOH have found their space—and their listeners. What began as background scores quietly evolved into complete sonic identities for OTT shows. We’ve vibed to them in Gumshudah from Mismatched—a track that twisted the very idea of the word into something groovy and addictive—and swayed to Aadayein Teri in The Royals.

Playing around with a new sound isn’t easy—music is deeply personal. But RUUH and JOH didn’t just play around; they owned it. Their style is engulfing, hypnotic, and fresh enough to make you surrender your skip button.

Mid-Day sat down with the duo to find out how they found their rhythm, built a soundscape from scratch, and stayed committed to dropping ONLY BANGERS

Not for the charts, but for the heart

While many chase the hit formula, RUUH and JOH flip the script. “We write for impact,” they assert. And impact they do. Their ability to tailor sound to narrative means every score becomes an emotional undercurrent in the story. “If the audio feels what you see, we’ve created magic.”

Amid the misconception that songwriters chase hits, RUUH and JOH stand out for a reason—they simply want their passion to be shared. Their creative process is rooted in instinct and melody, and it shows in every tune they produce. “We don’t write for hits, we write for impact”, the duo explained— a statement that perfectly captures their musical spirit. When asked what drives their process, they added, “It’s the core principle of our music—to create sounds that feel refreshing and new to give to the world.”

From melody to movement: The RUUH & JOH formula

In another conversation, RUUH and JOH shared that they have a ton of new music lined up. They’ve only just scratched the surface of their musical treasure chest and have so much more they’re excited to share. One of their standout tracks from The Royals was a fantastic, addictive remake of the `90s sensation Tu Tu Hai Wahi—an absolute banger that instantly grabbed attention. With every release, their music continues to chart impressively, and we couldn’t be happier for them. But what truly sets them apart is their signature fusion—a classical foundation laced with the energy and polish of EDM. That’s the magic that defines RUUH and JOH.

Tradition with techno: The dual pulse of RUUH & JOH

We asked how they preserve the surreal essence of classical music while mixing it with electronic sounds. For RUUH, the heart of their music lies in blending the old with the new. Deeply inspired by Indian folk and classical music, he believes these melodies carry a soulfulness that’s unmatched globally. “There’s something so distinct and true about it”, he says. By fusing these roots with contemporary elements like synth and electronic textures—shaped in part by his brother JOH’s strong electronic background—they’ve created a sound that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. Citing Hans Zimmer as a major influence, RUUH describes their sonic blend as something that connects generations while staying rooted in culture.

JOH revealed that his journey into EDM and electronic synths began back in 2010, when he started experimenting with the genre before eventually creating his own music. “You start to become it”, he explained, referring to how being immersed in the hypnotic tone of electronic music shaped his sound over time. That deep connection is why his music resonates so strongly—it’s authentic, because it comes from within.

He also gave us a peek into his EDM playlist, stacked with icons like Armin Van Buuren, Deadmau5, Skrillex, and more.

What’s next for RUUH and JOH? Fresh collabs and new heights

The music maestros also revealed that they’re gearing up for live performances soon. “The music is meant for stadiums”, they hinted. While we’re all eagerly waiting to see what’s coming next, RUUH and JOH admitted they might just be more excited than we are. They’ve been working on something for years now, and finally, they’re ready to share it with the world.”

After collaborating with Jubin Nautiyal, Jonita Gandhi, Neeti Mohan, Sukriti Kakkar, and Savera—travelling across the country and curating sonic masterpieces—the duo is back with a fresh new release featuring Nikita Gandhi.

With both film and non-film projects in the pipeline, fans can expect a surprise. If Bollywood is on the horizon, it’s not just a career move—it’s a cultural moment waiting to happen. And RUUH and JOH are dropping all the right hints.
